Mumbrellacast: TV Blackbox’s Rob McKnight on why Rove flopped, getting sacked and the real story behind Studio 10’s Brussels sprout incident

This week on the Mumbrellacast, TV Blackbox editor and former Studio 10 executive producer, Rob McKnight joined the team to discuss the best and worst of the morning program. He discussed Studio 10’s 1000th episode, Brussels sprout-gate, the time he “almost killed” Ita Buttrose, and his sacking from the network.

Also in TV, Saturday Night Rove was axed after only two episodes and went out with 138,000 metro viewers. The team asks Rob McKnight where it all went wrong. His response to this alone is worth tuning in for.

Seven announced its first commission under new CEO James Warburton, dog grooming competition Pooch Perfect, fronted by Australian actress Rebel Wilson. The show is already carrying a lot of weight on its shoulders, including whether or not it will turn the prime-time ratings ship around for the network.

Plus, fallout from Nine’s fundraiser for Liberal Party was revealed this week, the end of CEO Hugh Mark’s golden run in the media industry. So how independent are the former-Fairfax mastheads, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Australian Financial Review, from their new owners? Or were the breaking stories from these papers a smart PR move?

Finally from adland, 13Cabs launched a campaign from Thinkerbell, positioning it as the official travel partner of booty calls. McKnight and Mumbrella’s editor Vivienne Kelly debate its use of stereotypes, and whether or not the ads are funny.
