News Ltd appoints Toni Hetherington to new network sports digital role

News Ltd has appointed one of its most experienced editors to a new senior digital role aimed at boosting the company’s online sports readership and creating masthead sports apps.

Toni Hetherington, a former editor of mX and editor in chief of Leader Community Newspapers, has been appointed to the new position of network sports editor.

She is currently deputy editor of the Sunday Herald Sun and has also been chief sub and night editor of The Daily Telegraph.

Hetherington, who starts the new role on Monday, is the third member of News Ltd’s new Sports Hub team.

The launch of Sports Hub may raise the question of News Ltd’s policy for its aggregation portal news.com.au of linking to the Fox Sports website for much of its sporting coverage. The Fox Sports site is owned by Premier Media Group, a 50/50 venture between News Ltd and Consolidated Media Holdings whose major shareholders include James Packer’s Consolidated Press Holdings and Kerry Stokes’ Seven Network.

The Sports Hub team also consists of publisher Tom Salom and national sports director Sean Atkinson.

According to the News Ltd announcement, Hetherington will “liaise with group editors to produce high-quality digital content across newspaper, television and digital platforms.”

It added that she “would play a leading role in developing sports content for group mastheads, while also ensuring the latest material is delivered to production hubs for peak consumption times across all platforms. In addition, she will play a leading role in the design of websites and apps that will carry sport content under the banner of each masthead.”

Hetherington has also worked on the Glasgow Herald, The Australian and as sports editor for the Herald Sun.
