So little time to develop social media strategy
Labor has left it late to start a grassroots social media election campaign, argues Murdoch University’s David Maguire in a post which first appeared on The Conversation
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd set out from the election announcement to goad Opposition Leader Tony Abbott into a-debate-a-week schedule during the 33-day campaign.
The media-savvy PM and self-admitted “underdog” understands it is important to seize every opportunity to help the electorate to compare-and-contrast him directly with the main opponent.
He also understands these traditional, one-on-one debates provide spin-off fodder for the social media Twitter and Facebook platforms on which he comfortably roams.
You’re definitely too late Rudd. What a joke.
Tell him he’s dreaming.

Watched Q&A last night and this topic was discussed. Given that social media is frequented by youth, is Rudd going to use social media to get the youth of today to donate to his campaign. Isnt that taking money off kids.Surely we cant compare American style use of social media to one used on a voting population of 6 million
Just one point. Obama does have a unusual ability to speak in an inspirational way – so a ‘call to action’ can work.
Rudd is trying to sell a tired old party with corruption baggage and cruel asylum seeker policies. It’s a little hard to spin a ‘call to action’ campaign when the narrative sounds empty and the differences between the parties do exist – but are not that great.
He has practised the folksy approach to the point when although he might be quite popular, it is hard to change the tune to a more elevated note.
In the US there is really no credible alternative whereas in Australia disillusioned people can vote Wikileaks, Green or even someone like Katter or an independent and feel like they might score a representative at least in the Senate. Tweeting for the ALP somehow has a daggy feel. I might be wrong and I am not an expert in this area. I’m just a learner.
Julia “bought someone in” from the UK. It usually fails.
It’s worth a shot. I don’t think it will be a game changer by any means but it’s definately worth doing.
