Smoothfm rolls out nationally on digital radio
Dmg Radio Australia’s easy listening station Smoothfm rolled out nationally on digital radio platforms today.
Smoothfm, which Dmg rebranded from Classic Rock in Sydney and Melbourne in May last year, is now available via DAB+ radio.
The digital switch will enable people in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide to listen to Smoothfm via DAB+ Radio, online streaming and an iphone app. And advertisers will now be able to book the station nationally, through dmg radio’s local sales teams.
Smoothfm presenters Mike Perso, Ed Phillips, Ty Frost, Bogart Torelli and David Reyne will be heard weekdays while Richard Wilkins, David Campbell and Cameron Daddo will host their own DAB+ Radio shows on weekends.
Paul Jackson, dmg Radio Australia’s group program director, said in a press release: “We are delighted with the rapid success of smoothfm in Sydney and Melbourne. It was always our intention to create a national brand for both our listeners and clients.”
“We regularly get emails asking how listeners can hear Smoothfm outside of Melbourne and Sydney so we are looking forward to extending smoothfm’s unique and distinctive format into five capital cities,” he said.
In the latest Nielsen radio ratings released in December, smoothfm claimed 5.8 per cent share of weekday listeners, while in Melbourne the station claimed 4.9 per cent.
Is it a coincidence that Smooth FM appeared and NovaNation disappeared in Perth?

Questions you need answers for inclusion here are: will it be live, will there be audience interaction, will it be a clean feed, from what city will it originate from i.e. will they use the Melbourne or Sydney on-air staff or a mixture and what are the steps involved technically to make it happen. Importantly, will there be any external marketing?

So after becoming Australia’s first Digital Dance Radio Station, DMG radio have decided it would be better as Australia’s first hijacked and Invisible Digital Dance Radio Station…. Absolutely horrendous decision considering the market is already flooded within that Genre… Cruise, Mix Plus, Mix 80’s, Mix 90’s, Loveland and more
Bring NovaNation back to DAB+… Please !
If not reinstating NovaNation, buy and allocate Digital Spectrum for it, or Smooth 🙁

I had just received a DAB+ bluetooth radio that works with my Android phone the day before, specifically so I could listen to NovaNation. It’s useless now … the other stations are just boring.

@Alf – they don’t have anymore spectrum. They have to slice and dice the existing spectrum
@more details – all of the “stars” they have on air are pre recorded……and they don’t like interaction with the punters. The idea is that you only want to listen to the “smooth” tunes they have on repeat over and over again.

I don’t like Smooth, not because of the music, but because Nights with Alice Cooper is no longer available. Classic Rock/95.3 was the only station that broadcast that programme for the Sydney city DAB+ locality. When they switched over to Smooth last year, they stopped broadcasting the show, the only one I bothered listening to.

Smoothfm here in Adelaide is so soft that you have to turn the volume up quite a bit .Definitely not the same as all the other stations.
