The keyboard warrior of Twitter
In this guest post, NBN staffer Scott Rhodie writes an unofficial, personal view on his experience with a hostile Twitter critic.Last night I had a strange incident. While on Twitter I noticed someone saying that Australia’s NBN is already outdated. I wrote a small note back explaining they were incorrect.
And their response? The lovely gentleman (whose Twitter profile says: ‘Father of 5 kids, Loving Grandfather of 10 Grandchildren, and 2 Great Granddaughters. love to give heaps to Pollies and Poofters’) said to me: “Go and lick Gillards C*** out U commie Prick”
What's in a name?
In this guest post, Moensie Rossier wonders about the power of names for brands and marketers.
Brands have been having a bit of fun with names lately, not to mention a fair bit of success. Interbrand just named a headhunting firm Cloak & Dagger. And ‘Share a Coke’ showed how much power there is in a name.
The Coke campaign effectively short-circuited the usual mechanics of communication. It undoubtedly stroked people’s egos. But, I believe, its success stems from the fact that it directly and automatically affected people’s behaviour, rather than doing so indirectly by shaping attitudes.

The Super Bowl is all done and a team from North America won. But as well as some sort of sporting event, it’s the world’s biggest advertising showcase. See the best of them right here… and please tell us what you think.
How to debunk media myths
In this post, UWS’s Ullrich Ecker, John Cook and Stephen Lewandowsky argue that cognitive science can help PRs form strategies in managing media misreporting.
A growing cohort of commentators has bemoaned the descent of contemporary political “debate” into a largely fact-free zone.
How about simply focusing on what consumers want?
In this guest post, Peter Mountford argues that brands should think more about what is really going on for consumers

What the Optus web copyright victory means
In this analysis first published on The Conversation, RMIT’s Marita Shelly examines the implications of Telstra’s defeat over the online rights to the AFL broadcast deal
This week’s Federal Court ruling that Optus customers are able to view sporting matches minutes after they are streamed live without breaching copyright is a landmark decision that alters our understanding of copyright law, and has significant implications for the AFL’s broadcasting rights deal.
Does Gina Rinehart’s bite of a chunk of Fairfax make her an oligarch?
In an article that first appeared in The Conversation, Mark Rolfe wonders whether the mining magnate’s move could turn Fairfax into something resembling America’s Fox network.
Australia’s richest person Gina Rinehart has moved to increase her stake in Fairfax Media, owner of The Age, Sydney Morning Herald and a number of radio stations. Rinehart has already shown her desire to play a role in public life, campaigning against former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s aborted mining tax. She has also demonstrated a willingness to make media investments to ensure her pro-business worldview is promulgated.
What does this latest move by Rinehart mean?
Gillard's Australia Day crisis
PM Julia Gillard’s media adviser Tony Hodges has been forced to resign over the Australia Day tent embassy debacle.
It came after it emerged he had revealed opposition leader Tony Abbott’s whereabouts, leading to both politicians being rescued by police in ugly scenes.
Mumbrella editor Tim Burrowes and advertising practitioner Jane Caro debate the topic on Weekend Sunrise’s masters of Spin segment:
The biggest cock-up I made in business
In this guest post, Chris Savage urges agency staff to live the brand.I still shudder when I think about how incredibly stupid I was when I made the biggest stuff up of my career. And then, 18 years later, I did it again. Do not make this mistake with your clients. Ever.
Hey Groupon. Thanks for fucking up email
In this guest post, Daniel Monheit warns that group deal overload is devaluing email marketingEmail marketing used to be fabulous. Back in the heady days of 2010, brands would work hard to build up well qualified databases, upon which they’d bestow carefully crafted correspondence filled with information, offers and incentives. The recipients, of course would be delighted: “Oh look! An email! From one of my favourite brands! And it’s 40 cents off at Woolies this week!”.
The staggering sway of Harold Mitchell
The Power Index today names Aegis Media chairman Harold Mitchell as the most powerful person in Melbourne. Andrew Crook profiles him.
Harold Mitchell takes pride in dispensing with the niceties. When The Power Index visited his South Melbourne private office before Christmas, fresh remains were scattered all over the boardroom table.
Share a Coke with… the moronic masses
The most-read story on Mumbrella last year, with not far off 100,000 page views, was a fairly humdrum yarn about the launch of Coca-Cola’s name-on-a-bottle campaign. The headline, “Coca-Cola puts people’s names on bottles in ‘Share a Coke’ campaign”, though hated by any self-respecting sub-editor, was loved by Google. And in rushed what can be politely described as the public.
Assumptions kill creativity
In this guest post, Gual Barwell disagrees that the sales success of the Old Spice social media campaign was overstated.Yesterday’s post from Cathie McGinn suggested the Old Spice campaign failed to connect with consumers. Based on the facts and figures, I disagree.
What Old Spice and Wieden + Kennedy has done and done phenomenally well is to create a franchise.
The SMH's readers (are wrong) editor
We are now about five months into the reign of Australia’s first readers’ editor. And I don’t think it is working.
It struck me at the time of Judy Prisk’s appointment to the Sydney Morning Herald that the fact that her boss was editor-in-chief Peter Fray was not going to be ideal if she was going to be the independent voice of the reader.
The emperor's new fragrance: Old Spice’s campaign failure
In this guest post, Cathie McGinn slays a sacred cow of 21st century marketing – the highly awarded Old Spice campaign. One of the biggest myths of recent times (by which I mean a story of great heroism and triumph we’d all like to believe but deep down know to be untrue) is the Old Spice social media campaign. It’s been much lauded and awarded as an example of outstanding content, a creative and collaborative way of connecting with consumers and driving a record increase in sales.
Ten sacks Sandilands as Australian Idol judge
Network Ten has announced this afternoon that Kyle Sandilands has been sacked from his role as Australian Idol judge following the Today FM rape scandal on his radio show last week.
A statement released by the network today said, ”It has become increasingly clear that as Idol has remained a family focused show his radio persona has taken on a more controversial position over this period which is not in the interest of the show.”
While Sandilands will appear in the first three episodes of the series as they were taped prior to the radio scandal, the search is on for a replacement to join judges Marcia Hines and Ian “Dicko” Dickson for the seventh season of the show, which will premiere on Sunday night.
The sacking is the second blow for Sandilands this week with the Kyle and Jackie O show, the program at the centre of the controversy, being taken off air pending investigations into the incident.
Update: Sandilands has issued his own statement saying: “I’m disappointed at Channel 10’s decision to remove me from Australian Idol. I have truly loved being a part of the show and wish everyone involved all of the success for this coming season.”

It’s about time … good riddance to white trash I say. I might even consider watching Idol now. I haven’t watched it since he joined the judging panel … might wait till the third episode with him in it has passed though.

Don’t agree with what he did on the show. Don’t particularly like that shock-jock stuff. But if Kyle goes so should a lot of others. How about the music companies that peddle soft porn to kids in their latest videos? How about Foxtel making a big deal of a contestant on Designer Runway say “we’re fucked”? How about the people responsible for the current daytime radio campaign that beeps out “F$#@” every third word as if it wasn’t obvious? How about everyone who thinks having access to the media entitles them to say and do anything they wouldn’t have the guts and decency to say in front of their own mother or children. So, as much as I’m disgusted with his and Jackie O’s behaviour [or have we forgiven her simply because she's not Kyle] I fear he’s being made the fall-guy for all the crap that masquerades as edgy entertainment.

Thank goodness! Austereo couldn’t take a responsible action. Thank goodness the Idol franchise (way bigger influence than any Australian organisation) had the sense to make the right call.
Kyle – go away and think about your actions. See if you can really understand why everyone’s so mad and try to come back a better person. If you can’t, then just don’t come back!

Ive always liked Kyle. Sure, he can be a tool some of the time but he’s a pretty generous guy – if you listened to his show you would see that they’re always helping someone out in some way. Sadly, this segment went the wrong way. The one to be punishing in all of this is the girls mother. What a disgraceful human. I dont think he deserves to be sacked because of it.

From SMH: Sandilands said last night that he was disappointed with Ten’s decision. ‘‘I have truly loved being a part of the show and wish everyone involved all of the success for this coming season.”
Sounds like it came straight from a publicist’s Blackberry. I think Kyle’s actual response to Channel Ten would be little more than two words, the second one being “off”…

Absolutely agree Adam Paull. Having had the unpleasant experience of having to work closely with Vile and his on-air counterpart I can confirm that he is not a good person and that she is a willing participant who likes to be portrayed as “the nice one.”.
Over the years excuse after excuse has been made by Austereo to justify Vile’s behavior towards his staff and industry contacts as ratings have been all that mattered. Only now that the community is outraged at their latest hijinx have Austereo and Network Ten taken the appropriate action. About time indeed.

I feel that this was Bullsh!t and just comes to show that the media is just full of it.. they are typically up themselves, the TV news obviously have no other good news to share except put down their own people, wot? have they run out of things to say about the Kiwi’s… WOT’R'YA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if you listen to the 2day show and know the radio crew for who they really are, they do more for the Australians then any other australian i know!

I agree Kyle did the wrong thing but what everyone seems to be forgetting is the young girls mother. She knew and made her daughter tell Sydney radio listeners her horrible ordeal, not only that the mother did not bother to report or get her daughter much needed help. The mother seem to think it was funny, surely this is way worst then What Kyle said.

For everyone that brings up the girls mother – yes, we agree she is an irresponsible mother. But what Austereo, Kyle and Jackie O did was to allow for a segment that used a form of abuse as entertainment. That is wrong. Their whole show is wrong and people as ignorant as Kyle and Jackie should not be allowed to speak to large audiences as often as they do.
Put something on that is beneficial to society and take off that stuff that encourages base stupidity and disrespect.

@Stacey – no one is forgetting the girl’s mother. Without a doubt, she’s a first class idiot, someone who doesn’t deserve to have children. Seriously!
And while I agree Kyle is being made the scapegoat above and beyond Jackie O, 2Day FM and Austereo themselves (who initially said there would be no consequences for the tashy duo)… he definitely has only himself to blame.
Check out this article by MediaWatch: http://www.abc.net.au/mediawat.....644599.htm
This is far from the first horrible stunt the two of them have pulled on their show. And this isn’t even mentioning the time when their show was Brisbane based only, and they made another teenage girl cry by having the girl’s mother admit on-air that she’d slept with her daughter’s boyfriend.
Are Vile & Tacky to blame for the idiots they bring onto the show? Of course not. But are they responsible for how they handle themselves, and treat those they bring on the show? Yes!
Kyle did not respond appropriately, either, once the lie detector thing blew up in their faces. He basically tried to say ‘oh well, its sad but hey at least the girl is getting help now’. That was the upshot of his post on The Punch.
A contrite appology would have gone much further, but still… I’m so glad the Australian public were outraged and I sincerely hope both of those idiots take a moment to understand the gravity of this stunt and some of the others they’ve pulled off (without complaint) in the past.

Absolutely agree that this was the right thing for them to do, and in no way condone the stunt, but…
Most of the comments have based their criticism on the fact that a stunt around asking a 14yr old girl about her sexual experiences on air is deplorable in itself, and Kyle’s comments were just another step out of line.
If the rape thing had never come up, do you think there would have been any scandal ? or would it have been just another tacky stunt….
Do it take a rape for us to sit up and pay attention to this type of stuff ?
I think it probably does, and that’s a bit of a worry…

I wonder what’s happening to Jackie O? Kyle is 100% prat but she was there, their program director help set it up, there was more than one person involved here.
Bravo however to 10, I might look in on the show now that he’s gone.

14 y.o girl set-up on Kyle and Jackie O Show to discuss whether she’s had sex.
But mother endorses Kyle and Jackie O’s questioning.
Result – public outrage at exploitation of minor.
School Principal lets Bill Henson trawl primary school for 12 y.o child to pose nude for photo shoot.
But mother of Henson 12 y.o model gives permission for daughter to be photographed nude.
Result – public outrage of exploitation of minor.
Conclusion – Kyle, Jackie O and Henson and both sets of parents guilty of exploitation of minors and deserve condemnation.
But wait…….people who supported Henson are criticising Kyle and Jackie O.
Strange thing double standards.

To everyone replied to me…….like I said above first I do think what kyle DID was wrong (he could of use better words) I don’t need to be told that . But the mother did a way worst thing and it looks kyle is getting all the blame and I listen to the show that day it was no stunt it was not known before hand the girl was raped….I’m no kyle and jackie o fan but I did hear this while I was in a friends car. A lot of people hate kyle and I feel the media is using this poor girls rape against him…its sick its sad and I’m sick of hearing of it. I wanna hear some real news like the rape victims mother being charged with child neglect.
