Staples project recreates Sydney in stationery
Ad agency The Works has developed the concept and overseen the creation of a scale model of Sydney Harbour built entirely of stationery to mark the launch of office supplies company Staples’ Australian website.
The structure was created by artist Darcy Prendergast using 344 recycled sticky notes, 84 boxes of staples, 361 bulldog clips, 169 paperclips, 107 rubber bands and 132 coloured pencils.
Prendergast said: “We used a bird’s eye image of Sydney to map out the shape of the harbour and position Sydney’s most distinguished structures.
“We had our work cut out for us! The Opera House was one of the first icons to be built and painting that alone was a six hour job. We painted the entire building using tiny liquid paper brushes. Once the Opera House and Harbour Bridge were constructed the rest of the city started to take form. It was an extraordinary project, I’m truly happy with the end result.”

This is awesome. Can’t fault the thinking or the result.

I really like the idea and I think they did a great job with the actual artwork – let down by a bland concept and execution of the video. Shame.

Well done to The Works.

love it, but I would have liked to see it reach its conclusion with staples for a bit of branding

I’m sorry, but what a waste of client’s money. This just isn’t good enough to go viral or garner any extra PR to make the earned media offset the cost.

How many billing hours was that?

My kids seem to eat blue tac and white out so it’s nice to know there’s somewhere else to go after they clean out Officeworks.
Lovely ad.

Excellent.
Nice idea, well executed.

That’s a really nice idea – and great model – with surprisingly bland execution of the clip itself. The music… shame.

I love this. A charming, memorable – and most importantly, eminently shareable – creative idea, and the key message is inextricably linked to the execution. Bravo!

nice idea. well executed. You can see inspiration taken from Honda’s Cogs, but it’s none the worse for it.
It made me go to the website to see if I could view the completed model in detail. Shame it’s not there, would have enjoyed the ability to navigate the cityscape….

Great work, really nice strategy & execution, but where do you find the client who’s willing to pay for the amount of hours involved in that??!

Brilliant….what I most interested in is how its leveraged across multiple mediums. How do they make this activation / content work its ass off???!?!

Hey, Dicko, This video got the front page of MX, page 9 of the Saturday Telegraph and last I checked had 56, 000 views on YouTube. Me thinks you owe the client an apology,
