Con The Fruiterer steps onto Kekovich’s Australia Day turf
The marketing body for stonefruit is the latest organisation to attempt to tap into the success of Meat & Livestock Australia’s annual Sam Kekovich Australia day address with an ad from 1990s comedy character Con The Fruiterer.
The character – a regular on The Comedy Company – is played by actor Mark Mitchell. The ad sees Con The Fruiterer declare tomorrow Summer Stonefuit Day.
It is not the first time Con The Fruiterer has been used to promote fruit products. His previous efforts have included V8 fruit drink.
If you’re going to rip off someone else’s idea, then you have to do it better.
This is not better.

Lame. And about 2 minutes too long.

Con the Fruiterer is a legend! We need to bring him back to our screens.

The real shame here is I’ll never get those three minutes of my life back that I wasted watching that video 🙁

This falls really flat, ok his comedy sketches might work, but in this context it just comes across as a really poor imitation of the good work done on the MLA ads

Awful !, gave up at 1:30. Mark Mitchell is about as funny as Rove.

Not actually funny or even clever.

fu ck me. This is so shit. What a bunch of dribble. Whoever created this idea should be stoned to death in a public place. That way every fu cker who had to watch this tripe can get revenge. Up there with some of the shitest pieces of work I’ve seen lately namely
– AAMI ads (all of them)
– KFC Colonel ads (recent campaign)
– Any ad’s done for Jacobs Creek
All puss.

Such a copycat fail. Classic ‘not another flashmob’ reaction!
As previously mentioned, could’ve been half the length but needed to be done better than the original, which is impossible, because the Kekovich ads are some of the best ever!
I’ll leave the stonefruit til after Australia Day, when I need a diversion from eating Sam Kekovich’s bodyweight in Lamb Chops off the barbie!
Lamb FTW!

I found that especially unwatchable and unfunny, get Vasilli on the job!

A decent idea, horribly executed.

It’s a low-budget spoof, of course it can’t compete with the Lamb ads! It’s a bit of fun and nostalgia…probably not the best execution but it’s Con, what can you expect?!

i thought it was funny! i’m feeling the nostalgia

Agree with Friend to Con. MLA have an enormous budget – of course it’s not going to be of the same standard. On another note, Con hasn’t aged a bit.

Had to stop it after one minute.
Too painful.
He couldn’t even maintain the accent.

I think it would be more fitting for his shirt to say 100% DRIBBLE…
Far from funny!

Awful.

Gold! This takes me back to the early 90s – the days of good Aussie comedy/television. Onya Con. Love your work mate!
