Social gifting service Wrapp to launch in Australia
A social gifting service backed by the founders of Skype and Spotify is launching in Australia.
Wrapp allows people to give Facebook friends free gift cards provided by retailers that want to attract customers.
Founded in Sweden in November 2011, the service launched in the UK and Norway in March, and will be launching in the US and Australia “very soon”, according a press release from the company.
Tony Been has been installed as country manager for the Australian operation. Been joined the company in March from IT training firm DDLS. Before that, he was commercial director of Unistraw, a company that makes drinking straws.
Been said: “We think gift giving should be an everyday occasion. Now, thanks to Wrapp, you can do it simply and instantly with friends and family around the world – and because the gift cards are stored in your phone they’re always with you when you want to buy something you really want.”
Wrapp’s CEO Hjalmar Winbladh said: “Retailers have been struggling for the last couple of years to find a way to use the latest mobile and social technologies to their business advantage. Daily deals, they found, dilute their brands and more often than not drive unprofitable sales from consumers who don’t come back without a discount. We think it’s time for retailers worldwide to turn Facebook fans and loyal customers into their best sales force ever and only pay for the service when consumers make a purchase in-store.”
I wonder what inspired the inverted golden arches logo?

Interesting. The story’s subject, Tony Been, correctly uses the phrase “gift giving”.
So where did this remedial-English phrase “social gifting” come from?
“Gifting” is not a word. Never will be, while the verb “give” exists.
Must come from the same Pidgin speakers who gave us “key learnings”, when the word they’re looking for is “lessons”.
