VML scores Australia’s only Yellow Pencil among 37 winners at D&AD Awards

rip curl search gpsJust one Australian agency has walked away with a coveted Yellow Pencil at this year’s D&AD Awards, with VML winning one in the Mobile Marketing category for its Rip Curl Search GPS campaign for Rip Curl.

VML managing director and ECD Aden Hepburn will share the inside story on the campaign on the Behind the Scenes in Creativity panel at Mumbrella 360 running across June 2-4.

Overall Australia won 37 Pencils at this year’s festival, with the vast majority of them Wood, which has this year replaced the ‘In Book’ accolade at the awards.

The juries handed out five Black pencils, the highest accolade, with New Zealand’s Colenso BBDO winning in the Radio Advertising Campaign category for its K9FM campaign.

There were 14 Graphite Pencils, which replaced the ‘Nomination’ classification this year, handed to Australian agencies including two for Leo Burnett Sydney’s WWF print executions Shark and Poachers in the Illustration for Advertising category and two for Whybin\TBWA Melbourne for the ANZ GayTM campaign for ANZ Bank.

Australian radio specialists Eardrum were also well represented at the awards for three ads they created for Impact BBDO in Dubai for Commercial Insurance – which picked up a Wood and two Graphite in the Radio category for Writing and Campaign.

D&AD chief executive Tim Lindsay said: “The introduction of our new Pencil levels – Wood and Graphite – has clearly made an impression. Our judges were happier to award brilliant work, and we’re going to have our thickest ever Annual as a result.

“Inversely, they now regard Yellow as an even tougher accolade. Personally I’m delighted that White Pencil work is now a central pillar of the awards.”

The UK was the most awarded country with a total of 229 pencils, with the US claiming second place.
