Waleed Aly returns to ABC RN to shed light ‘on some of the wicked social issues of the day’

The former host of RN Drive, Waleed Aly, will return to ABC RN after Easter as co-host of The Minefield.

The announcement:

Waleed Aly, former host of RN Drive, makes a welcome return to ABC RN as co-host of The Minefield, one of two new programs commencing on the network after Easter.

Each week, beginning Thursday 9 April, 11.30— 12 noon, Waleed, along with Scott Stephens, Editor of the ABC’s Religion and Ethics website and specialist commentator on religion and ethics for ABC radio and television, will shine the spotlight on some of the wicked social issues of the day, helping listeners negotiate the ethical dilemmas, contradictory claims and unacknowledged complicities of modern life.

“It’s always such a privilege to be on RN, and always such a joy to be exploring such big ideas with great people. This show distills everything I love, and everything that’s unique about this corner of broadcasting,” said Waleed. “I’ve never done a show on RN without Scott. And why would I do a show without him? He’s always stimulating, frequently provocative and constantly expanding our intellectual horizons.”

“Even the most sure footed of us at times find ourselves perplexed when confronted with moral problems—or are instinctively dissatisfied with the solutions currently on offer,” said RN’s Manager Deborah Leavitt. “I can think of no better pair to bring these issues to light.”

Showcase, RN’s other new weekly program will take listeners to unexpected places with specially commissioned short-run series, each following an interesting theme explored across four to six episodes. From space travel to the way we use words, from the lives of animals to the hidden assumptions of everyday banter, Showcase parades a world of engrossing ideas. Showcase commences Sunday 12 April,

Additional changes to the current schedule include:

 Earshot, presented by David Rutledge, will be broadcast Monday to Wednesday, 11—12 noon and Thursday 11—11.30 am, commencing Monday 6 April.

 Blueprint for Living, RN’s popular new Saturday morning program presented by Michael Williams, director of the Wheeler Centre, will be extended by 30 minutes: Saturday, 9.00—10.30am, commencing Saturday 18 April.

 The Music Show, presented by Andrew Ford, will continue to entertain and surprise its devoted listeners in the new time of Saturday and Sunday, 10.00—11.00am, commencing Saturday 18 April.

 Fans of All in the Mind, presented by Lynne Malcolm, and The Philosopher’s Zone, presented by Joe Gelonesi, will be pleased to hear that these two programs will now become a permanent fixture on the RN schedule, rather than seasonal ones, from Sunday 19 April.
