Tropfest releases trailer directed by 2012 winner Alethea Jones
Tropfest has released the trailer to its 2013 festival, directed by last year’s winner, Alethea Jones.
The whimsical trailer tells the story of how the balloon, Tropfest’s signature item which must appear in every film entry, was first created.
Jones won last year with her film Lemonade Stand and has since made multiple trips to the US, one as part of the Tropfest winner’s prize, where she has multiple irons in the fire including a debut feature film.
Following in a similar style to Lemonade Stand, the Tropfest trailer is a dark comedic story that mixes live action with animation.
Of the brief from Tropfest, Jones told Encore: “I was presented with a few ideas that had already been developed. One of which was the humble beginnings of the balloon. They already had the idea of a little girl who steals a balloon from the lab. And I took it to the writer Lou Sanz. She has a very dark voice. We are working together on a few fairytale ideas to take to Hollywood, so it was apt to work together and show our wares.
“It’s a bit more dark than Lemonade stand in tone. Plus I found animation saves money. You can do so many things – we couldn’t afford a dove so we drew one in. We couldn’t afford a factory so we got a still and added the animated balloons. You have to get wonderful animators too.”
Jones and Tropfest enlisted Cutting Edge to craft the VFX, design and animation as well as finalising the film with grading and composition.
Festival director John Polson said in a statement: “We’re excited to have our 2013 trailer directed by Alethea. She showed us in 2012 that she is a talented director; she’s done so much since her win and continues to demonstrate her ability as a great storyteller with this trailer.”
The trailer was produced by Cate Stewart and Henry Kalaf, edited by Sasha Dylan Bell with music composed by Noise International’s Bruce Heald.
The festival will be held in Sydney’s The Domain and other live venues around Australia on Sunday February 17.
