QLD FX studio nominated for Emmy

Make-up artist Jason Baird and his team at Gold Coast-based company JMB FX Studio have bee nominated for an Emmy for their work on The Pacific, in the Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for a Series, Miniseries or Movie category.

The team included Jac Charlton, Sean Genders, and Los Angeles-based specialists Gregory Nicotero KNB EFX, Chad Atkinson and Ben Rittenhouse.

The brief for Baird and his team was to recreate realistic bomb, bullet and shrapnel wounds for soldiers injured on Pacific killing fields. They are competing against Castle, Grey’s Anatomy, Nip/Tuck and True Blood.

According to the company’s website, “We devised a plan to have levels of detail in the effects, actors in prosthetics including 3D transfers and foam appliances. Along with KNB EFX we produced , hundreds of articulated replica human bodies and body parts to augment the scope of the carnage. The majority of the episodes required custom-built effects; to these puppet bodies we added another level of detail for their extreme close-up work. We really had the opportunity to utilize all of the techniques available to us from scar material to the latest silicone appliances.”

A Tom Hanks / Steven Spielberg production for HBO, The Pacific was shot in north Queensland and Melbourne in 2008. The mini-series received 24 Emmy nominations in total.

The Emmys will be held on August 29 in Los Angeles.
