Steve Price exits 2GB, Deb Knight to replace him
After almost ten years, radio host Steve Price is parting ways with Macquarie Media as he and his bosses were unable to agree on his future with the radio business.
Price currently hosts the afternoon programming on Sydney’s 2GB and Brisbane’s 4BC. Nine completed its takeover of Macquarie Media earlier this year.
In an email seen by Mumbrella, Nine’s radio boss Tom Malone told staff Price would be leaving the network as the two parties ‘could not agree on the best way forward for 2020’. In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, a Nine-owned publication, Price said the radio business wanted him to return to nighttime programming, something he was unwilling to do.
The SMH confirmed Deborah Knight would be taking over from Price. Knight was dropped from Nine’s Today earlier this year, in favour of the return of Karl Stefanovic and Allison Langdon.
Knight will continue her role as a fill-in newsreader for Nine, as well as the new radio duties. Knight’s Today co-host Georgie Gardner will also stay with Nine as a newsreader.
Knight said: “I got my start in journalism behind the radio mic in Wagga Wagga, and I’m really excited about embarking on a new challenge with 2GB and 4BC. There’s nothing like radio for making an immediate connection with your audience, and Afternoons offers the chance to look at the big issues of the day and have some fun as well.
“And how lucky am I – I’ve got the best of both worlds – continuing with my TV role at Nine in both news and the Today Show. Bring on 2020.”
Malone said: “I have worked closely with Deb for 20 years, and I rate her so highly as one of Australia’s most talented and hard-working journalists. She has a big career ahead of her in radio and I’m delighted she’s joining the 2GB and 4BC family in 2020.”
Malone thanked Price for his contribution to Macquarie Media and wished him well for the future. Price is also a regular panellist on Ten’s The Project.
Nine are “Poor Business Managers” who are not at all interested about their loyal employees who have worked their butts off to build the reputation of the station, they mis-handle business decisions over at Channel 9 that is, and then have to urgently backtrack to find jobs for the employees they have mis-handled by placing hem at the
(newly acquired 2GB), hence the Deborah Knight, Karl Stefanovic scenarios!! Chris Smith, Steve Price, Alan Jones should all either move to 2SM or open up a new talkback channel and build that radio station up (which wouldn’t be that difficult to do) and make sure the radio ratings go wherever they go, which will not only teach Nine a valuable lesson that “valued employees” are not to be mistreated this way, but would also hit them in the hip pocket. As an avid loyal 2GB listener, apart from the Alan Jones Breakfast Show I won’t be listening to that radio station again!!

How do you take a number one radio station and send it to last let Tom Malone fix it. When Knight interviewed Matt Kean the other day she let him off the hook. Tom Malone knows she failed on the today show why would she be a success here. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Look forward to Tom Malone [Edited under Mumbrella’s comment moderation policy]

2GB seems to be shedding a lot of talent. First Chris Smith now Steve Price.
Might be a good idea to at least keep these guys as fill in announcers for when guys like Alan Jones take time off.

Look back to the 70’s when 3AW was part of Chanel 9’s studio’s in Bendigo st. Channel 7 Melbourne was owned by the Herald-Sun (HSV7).
The reality is, 9 is doing what every clever broadcaster would do. Promote its own talent and programming, via its own assets.
I didn’t see Ben Fordham’s move in 2014, from the Today show to 2GB, doing any harm to the station or network… quite the opposite!
Everyone just needs to take a big deep breath in and relax….

I can not understand why 2GB replaced Alan Jones with Ben Fordham there is no comparison.
Ben is better suited for TV and OK for the after noon show so he can repeat you heard it first here, and a lot of advertising and fund raising.
In the morning I want to listen to what is going on in the real world and some one that can put up an argument like Alan Jones used to do. Steve Price was the man to do it, if and when Mr Jones was to retire from radio.
Apart from Ray Hadley there is not much to listen too at 2GB.
