Footy season doubles sports content consumption time in March: Ipsos

The opening rounds of the AFL and NRL footy season has doubled the time spent per person consuming online sports content from 35 minutes on average in February to 74 minutes in March, according to Ipsos iris data.

Ipsos iris found some 12.4 million people used a sports website or app in March, with the total audience growing 4.3 percent over February.

In addition to the NRL and AFL season, the New South Wales election and Oscars buzz also boosted the number of people using a website or app during the month of March to 20.3 million. Australians spent some 5.5 hours during March consuming online news content.

Ipsos iris’ news category includes audience and time spent online on both general news and broader news content including weather, sport, lifestyle, entertainment and business news.

Men were consuming 25% more news content than women in March, while people aged 65 and above spent the most time consuming news content at 9.5 hours for the month, closely followed by 55-64 year olds who spent just under nine hours consuming news.

Also measured by Ipsos iris was the amount of time Australians spent online on a PC/laptop, smartphone or tablet device, with those aged 14 and above logging in 3.5 hours per day, or more than 107 hours in March. This was steady compared to the time spent the month prior.

The most consumed online categories by total audience size during the period included social networking (21 million), technology (20.8 million), search (20.8 million), retail and commerce (almost 20.7 million), entertainment (20.6 million), finance (20.4 million) and news (20.3 million).

People aged between 25-39 were found to be the largest cohort online, while people aged between 55-64 spent the most time online in March.
