Icon Agency appoints Gabrielle Gray as its first general manager

Integrated communications firm Icon Agency has appointed business consultant Gabrielle Gray to the newly created role of general manager.

Gray first joined the agency in late 2021 in a consulting capacity to manage finance and resourcing for a number of key client accounts and made an immediate impact.

“Gabrielle has been a fantastic addition to the Icon team. She delivers tremendous value across all departments of the business and is a natural choice to lead the team as general manager in our next phase of growth,” said Icon managing director, Joanne Painter.

The new role will see Gray lead the commercial strategy for the business, utilising her more than 20 years of experience partnering with a diverse range of creative businesses to drive efficiency and growth.

The appointment follows two years of significant growth for Icon, with the agency having doubled in size and revenue since 2021. Gray is part of a suite of recent appointments for the agency, including new director of strategic advisory and public affairs, Hamish Fitzsimmons, along with four news hires in May as the agency expanded its Sydney office.

Gray’s appointment continues Icon’s commitment to driving gender equality in the leadership ranks which has been gender balanced since 2021.

“Diversity and inclusion are fundamental to our ethos. We’re proud to add another talented woman to our senior leadership team. As a female leader myself, I know how important it is to ensure a balanced and diverse workforce at all levels, and to provide senior role models for young practitioners to see and work with – and to aspire to such roles in future,” said Painter.

Gray added she was drawn to Icon by their commitment to purposeful work, which was solidified with the agency’s recently launched brand platform: ‘For people, with purpose’.

“It’s fantastic to join a business with a strong focus on making a positive impact in the world. As one of Asia-Pacific’s most exciting and rapidly expanding agencies, it’s brilliant to be part of a team of dynamic practitioners focused on creating value not only for clients, but also for their communities,” said Gray.

In early August 2022, Icon was ranked as the fourth fastest growing agency in the Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa, according to the prestigious 2022 PRovoke PR Agency ‘Fast Movers’ rankings.

“We continue to grow quickly, thanks to the support and trust of our clients. Producing award-winning, purposeful campaigns that create value is what drives us, and we’re energised by the opportunity to do this every day in partnership with our talented team,” said Painter.
