Optus releases animated spot for ‘Donate Your Data’ initiative to keep young Australians connected

Optus has launched an animated spot in support of its initiative to encourage customers to donate their unused data to young Australians who may not have regular access to the internet.

Melissa Hopkins, head of marketing at Optus, said the initiative was crucial at this time to help kids stay connected to their classmates while doing schoolwork at home.

“Unfortunately, some Aussie kids really are getting left behind academically and socially, because they can’t access the same things their classmates can,” Hopkins said.

“Donating a bit of your data just helps them feel more connected to all that’s going on in their lives, particularly now. It really does make a difference.”

The 45-second spot, ‘Jumpstart’, was made by creative studio Bear Meets Eagle on Fire, and animated by Danish animation studio Sun Creature.

It shows a boy whose jetpack runs out of power and is left behind by his friends. But, he gets some unexpected help from creatures watching nearby, enabling him to recharge and take off.

Empathy is at the centre of the campaign, said Bear Meets Eagle on Fire co-founder, Micah Walker.

“It’s a simple idea about empathy and sharing some of what you have.

“I’m really pleased with how Louis, Guillaume and the talented team at Sun Creature helped us bring it to life. We’ve wanted to work with them for a while now,” Walker said.

Donate Your Data launched in December 2019 and has already seen over 5.7m GB of data donated to young people in need.

For the month of April, Optus is offering an additional 20GB of data to postpaid mobile customer and 10GB of prepaid customer who recharge with $40 or more.

Other initiatives Optus has introduced to support its customers during the COVID-19 crisis, include: increasing the capacity on both the mobile and fixed networks; offering a free trial of its SMB product, Loop Live, to small to medium businesses that have shifted to working from home; suspending Optus Sport monthly subscription fees until the end of May for customers on paid subscriptions; making fixed broadband plans unlimited; and mobilising Optus stores to support the strain on service centres.
