Scire’s Capital Brief soft-launches to the public

After announcing its editorial lineup last month, news startup Scire’s debut publication Capital Brief has soft-launched to the public.

In an email to subscribers on its waitlist, Capital Brief said the first instalment of its weekday newsletter, The Edition, will be out this afternoon.

John McDuling, editor-in-chief of the publication, outlined Capital Brief’s editorial visions, which include being pro-market but not blindly pro-business, politically neutral, climate aware and privacy-conscious.

“We are unabashed enthusiasts for free market capitalism, but believe that for an economy to function properly business must be rigorously scrutinised by the media.

“We take no sides in partisan politics. And we will never tell our audience how to vote.

“We believe the transition from fossil fuels to renewables and the race to net zero represent the biggest shift to the economy in decades, with significant implications for politics and society.”

McDuling joined from The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age where he was the national business editor, and worked with one of Scire’s founders, Chris Janz.

Janz established Scire with former Nine colleague, David Eisman, in early 2023. The duo was determined to “build a generational company with Australian journalism at its core”.

“There are reasons to be alarmed about this situation, particularly when trust in the news media is declining and the integrity of the information we consume is under threat,” Scire’s beta website read.

“We believe Australia deserves better.”
