Skippy turns his back on Captain Risky in Budget Direct’s new campaign

Budget Direct’s Captain Risky is left hanging upside down in a tree while an unhelpful kangaroo looks on, in the newest addition to the brand’s ‘Get More’ campaign,

Opening with a man staring at his smashed car while he seamlessly opens the Budget Direct claims app, the Skippy-inspired ad from 303MullenLowe was created to highlight the brand’s accident insurance phone claims service.

The voiceover then reminds viewers, “Not everyone’s a Budget Direct customer”, showing Captain Risky dangling in a tree wrapped up in his parachute, as his ruined plane billows smoke nearby.

Risky begs the kangaroo to find him some help and as the roo skips off, seemingly impervious to Risky’s requests, the voiceover asks, “Do you get a 24/7 phone claim service? Get more with Budget Direct.”

Jonathan Kerr, director of marketing and digital at Budget Direct told Mumbrella: “We show the insurance moment of truth where a Budget Direct customer is dealing with the need for insurance at that moment and then Budget Direct offering really high-level service for various different things.

“It’s all about actually bringing to life the difference of being a Budget Direct customer and getting that high level of service, juxtaposed against Captain Risky’s situation where he isn’t with Budget Direct and he is in trouble as a result,” Kerr said.

Richard Morgan, executive creative director at 303MullenLowe, said: “Captain Risky is a classic daredevil, the kind of character we recognise from 70’s TV shows. ‘Kangaroo’ happily plays in that world, it’s a world we all know and love, while also managing to make a serious point.”
