Vice partners with SBS to launch TV channel Viceland
Vice is partnering with public broadcaster SBS to bring its lifestyle and culture TV channel Viceland to Australia, with the channel set to launch later this year.
The new channel will be owned and operated by SBS and will be on the SBS 2 channel spectrum and online platforms.
Viceland will feature Australian-produced programs with a focus on a “distinct, immersive style of original lifestyle and culture content for young viewers”.
Michael Ebeid, SBS managing director and CEO, said: “Exploring diversity through culture is at the heart of SBS’s purpose and we are excited to be partnering with Vice to bring some of the best available content from across the world, never before seen in Australia, in documentary, journalism and inspiring entertainment, free to all Australians on SBS channels and platforms.”
Michael Slonim, Vice Australia managing director, said: “This is a unique partnership that will help catapult Vice further into the consciousness of young Australians. SBS shares our storytelling sensibilities and curiosity about the world, and we’re delighted to be partnering up to bring Viceland to this market in the biggest way possible.”
The launch of Viceland in Australia was signalled earlier this month by Vice partner, Erik Lavoie, who said Vice believes in “creating a body of work at a global scale from markets all around the world that everyone is sharing not only creates a lot of efficiencies but also gives consumers something that is a little bit different to what their local content providers do”.
“We’re taking that attitude and mentality to TV as well, so when the channel launches in Australia it will have content coming from Canada, the US, the UK, France – all the places where the channel exists – and then supplement with some additional programs that are Australian in nature. We believe that is something that doesn’t exist today,” he said.

So to access Viceland on the internet will one have to go through the SBS site or directly to http://www.viceland.com, a little confused, other than that the content looks great if their website is anything to go by.

Looking forward to this new channel. Anything to escape the horrible content on the commercial stations.
