Koala’s cheeky ‘Boomer Blocker’ campaign gives youth a head start, via Thinkerbell
Furniture brand Koala has launched an Australian-first initiative, offering to pay the rent or mortgage of one Aussie for an entire year, to help them ‘live like a Boomer.’
The campaign, via Thinkerbell, claimed that while Australians battle soaring costs of living, job insecurity, low wage growth and high rental prices and interest rates, there are a lucky few in the baby boomer generation enjoying financial security and appreciating assets.
As such, to stop the ‘golden generation’ from claiming more good deals, Koala invented a ‘Boomer Blocker’ for the competition, which closed last Friday.
The ‘Boomer Blocker’ quizzed applicants on a number of popular culture moments easily understood by millennials and generation Z, giving Australia’s youth a head start.
Rory Costello, chief commercial officer at Koala, said: “Koala’s promise to Australians is to make the good living more gettable, by offering premium furniture options at affordable prices.
“At a time when premium furniture is usually reserved for boomers and their big wallets, we wanted to give millennials, gen Z’ers and everyone in-between, the opportunity to have their rent or mortgage paid for an entire year, so they could use their cash for other luxuries that boomers enjoy daily.
These efforts are simply a tongue-and-cheek love letter to the younger Aussie generation who we can all recognise are doing it tough in today’s economy,” Costello added.
Paul Swann, Thinkerbell’s executive chief tinker, said: “With over 30,000 entries received, we definitely captured the attention of Gen Z, Millennials and everyone in between.
“It was funny to read all the angry emails boomers sent to Koala too,” he said.

Are there any other minorities they are planning to discriminate against while they’re at it? It was boomers who fought against the white Australia policy which was, in part, enforced by an exam the applicants couldn’t possibly pass. So it is somewhat ironic that this is the way koala have chosen to discriminate against older Australians. As a younger Australian I will say I find all baseless discrimination abhorrent and koala have guaranteed I won’t be buying they’re overpriced foam.
