ABC News takes #3 on Podcast Ranker, despite less than 5,000 downloads per episode
ABC’s brief news bulletin is the third most-popular Australian podcast according to the May Podcast Ranker, despite averaging just over 4,000 streams per episode.
Hamish and Andy have topped the Podcast Ranker again for May, with 1.89 million downloads across five episodes (31 days hath May), followed closely by Casefile, which had 1.88 million downloads across four episodes.
In third is ABC News Top Stories, a brief, regular news bulletin that released 417 different episodes in the month of May, which were downloaded 1.72 million times. Using mathematics, that’s an average of just 4,119 downloads/streams per episode.
Mamamia Out Loud is in fourth, with 1.54 downloads across 29 episodes, while Shameless sits in fifth place, drawing just over a million listeners to its 11 episodes.
The top five remained static, with The Kyle and Jackie O Show jumping up three spots to #6. This bodes well for the growing success of its Melbourne breakfast show — but also makes up for a two-spot drop in April.
ABC News Daily also jumped three spots, from #13 to #10, while Squiz Today jumped from #19 to land just behind ABC News Daily at #11.

Why on earth DON’T they report the total time across the month and the average time spent per listener per day. Now that would be usable data.

Would be really good to clarify in copy here that the ranker is opt in and is not curently representative of every podcast or publisher. This ranker goes a really long way towards bringing together great data from a disjointed industry – but reporting results without this important point isn’t helpful.
