Microsoft unveils OpenAI-powered new generation Bing

Microsoft has launched the new AI-powered Bing search engine and Edge browser, promising improvements in search, answers, chat experience and the addition of content generation ability.

The news comes after Google announced the testing of its Artifical Intelligence (AI) chatbot Bard yesterday, and the release late last year of the Microsoft-back OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a free AI bot.

Chairman and CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, said: “AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search.”

The AI-powered Bing looks to provide more relevant search results in areas such as sports scores, stock prices and weather. The completion of the answers is also set to be improved.

For more complicated searches, such as trip planning, Bing now offers an interactive chat that allows users to refine the search by putting forward relevant questions.

The content generation capability includes actions such as creating an itinerary, writing an email and crafting a quiz for trivia night, including links to web sources.

Meanwhile, the AI-improved Edge browser will add two new functionalities: Chat and compose. These will give browsers the capability to, for example, summarise a financial report or generate social media prompts for users.

The new Bing will run on a new-generation OpenAI, which Microsoft said to be more powerful than ChatGPT that the company also backed. The new engine is available in a limited preview on the desktop now.
