Stuff You Should Know retains top Podcast Ranker spot, as list splits Australian and international titles

Stuff You Should Know has retained the number one spot in the Australian Podcast Ranker. The iHeartPodcast/ Australian Radio Network title joined the ranking last month when it was opened up to international titles.

At the time, CEO of Commercial Radio Australia (CRA), Joan Warner, said the addition of international titles would provide more valuable information for advertisers and publishers.

This month, however, CRA has announced the ‘All-Australian Top 100’ category, effectively removing the recently-added international titles.

The Australian Podcast Ranker from now on will include international productions, such as chart-topping Stuff You Should Know, and local podcasts, such as PodcastOne’s Hamish and Andy.

Within this, the ‘All-Australian Top 100’ Australian Podcast Ranker will list only the Australian productions. This month, News Corp’s From The News Room topped the Australian List. With the inclusion of international titles, it was second.

Hamish and Andy were third overall, and second in the Australian listing.

Warner said the All-Australian breakout highlighted Australia’s efforts in the medium.

“The release of an ‘All-Australian Top 100’ category is a way to further highlight locally-created content and the increasing level of investment that local publishers are putting into local productions and content,” she said.

“It’s also pleasing to see continued growth in podcasting listening, with total downloads for the ‘Top 100’ up 18% over the previous month.”

To be included in the Australian list, podcasts must be commissioned by an Australian publisher.

Some of the biggest movers in the list were Southern Cross Austereo’s Hughesy and Ed (Dave Hughes and Ed Kavalee’s Hit Network drive show), which climbed 14 places to 15th overall (11th amongst the Australian titles), and SCA’s Fifi, Fev and Byron (Fifi Box, Brendan Fevola and Byron Cooke’s Melbourne Fox FM breakfast show), which jumped 21 placed to 30th overall (23rd in Australia). The Rush Hour with MG on SCA’s Triple M also jumped 15 places to 41st overall (14th in Australia).

SEN Afternoons jumped 42 places to take out 47th spot (34th in Australia).

Big falls were experienced by PodcastOne’s Crappy to Happy (down 20 places to 96th), Nine Radio’s Ben Fordham Live (down 17 places to 67th), and News Corp’s The Lighthouse, covering the disappearance of Belgian backpacker Theo Hayez (down 25 places to 53rd).
