Tasmania plans TV show to promote state
The Tasmanian Government is planning to pay a TV broadcaster to develop, make and air a series promoting the state as an exciting place to live and do business.
The scheme is revealed in a newly issued tender document from the Tasmanian Government’s Department of Economic Develoment and Tourism. According to the document:
“The objective of the TV series is to create a greater awareness and appreciation of the innovativeness and ingenuity of Tasmanian people and businesses within the state and interstate. Ideally the audience will respond excitedly by what can happen in Tasmania to the point that they may be motivated and inspired to consider moving to Tasmania, starting a business in Tasmania and / or exploring the opportunities that Tasmania has to offer.”
The tender, which has a deadline of May 26, says that the show must have a “nationally recognised host with business nous”, “be attractive to a national broadcaster” and be aired in Tasmania “in an appropriate timeslot”.
The plan is part of the Tasmania Brand Project. According to the Tasmanian Government: “The aim of the Tasmania Brand Project is to strengthen the Tasmanian brand through enhancing our island’s advantages and mitigating our disadvantages in the minds of key stakeholders. The scope of the Project includes promoting and encouraging Tasmania as a great place to Live, Work, Visit, Study, Invest and Trade.”
This is an interesting move when everyone else is looking at clever online campaigns. I think it’s a bit old fashioned and will be pretty expensive for them. Personally I hate advertorial style television and won’t be tuning in.

I think its a high risk strategy.
I believe TV or film can do wonders for a city or nation, but its an expensive exercise that might fall flat, especially when you have a Government organisation with not experience with making a TV series deciding what constitutes a good idea or story line by a gov tender process.
It reminds me of Tourism Australia promoting the movie ‘Australia’!!!

It now says this tender has been withdrawn?

Hi Clare,
Thanks for flagging that up. According to the website, it was withdrawn today. I’ve asked the question, and will report back once I’ve heard from the Tasmania Brand Project.
Cheeers,
