Thrifty features child riding a toy car in first TV ad for over a decade
Car rental hire company Thrifty has launched its first television commercial in over a decade with its latest ‘Smiles all the Way’ campaign.
Developed by Y&R the 30 second advertisement features a young boy riding a toy car in a shopping centre, showing off to two little girls who walk past with their parents.
The ad, backed to a remake of ‘When You’re Smiling’ produced by Nylon Studio, the ad focuses on the interaction between a Thrifty employee and the little boy as the Thrifty staffer adds more coins to the toy vehicle so the boy can continue to ride it.
‘Smiles All the Way’ aims to focus on Thrifty’s customer focused approach to its business.
Tom Mooney, CEO at Thrifty, said in a statement: “We have invested heavily in creating teams across the country that have a culture of being truly focused on the customer, shifting our attention to not just renting vehicles at the point of transaction but providing a service across all points of the journey that has customers smiling all the way.
“This new television campaign demonstrates how passionate we are about our new brand promise as we continue to build our position as Australia’s most-loved vehicle rental company.
“Price and location remain the key drivers of rental choice and with our affordable and convenient car & truck hire in more than 170 locations around Australia we can meet that need while remaining steadfastly devoted to providing great customer service every step of the way.”
Might have been ok twenty years ago or maybe even 12 months ago. What sexist garbage!!

I will be going out of my way to not use Thrifty after that misogynist, anachronistic offering.

Oh for goodness sake Sue, its creative thinking, nothing of what your suggesting. Every child is born with an imagination, children play make believe, its hard enough to cast the right child and on the deadline of the job, this kid is epic (understand the industry lady) !! The ad is about being free, being looked after, your just being a bully. Children dream, play make believe and if your going this far over this then don’t let a child dream or play again, incase they do something quote “wrong” “mr or mrs this or that like come one” your comment is ridiculous, your no better by bringing this down, a job like this creates a team and its amazing. I love this ad, its wonderful and I love this child actor like thats hard enough! The ad is fresh, smiling, its about imagination and the feeling of freedom when you get a new car, I’m sure you felt this before? its also about being looked after and feeling good inside. Don’t be jealous lady

I agree with you Steve, it irritated from the first time I saw it. The little boy has an air of entitlement, the little girls go weak at the knees at his attention. The Thrifty “girl” pops a coin in the machine “and the whole world smiles with you”. What messages does that convey to boys and girls. I appreciate that political correctness can go a bit too far sometimes but this is absolutely inappropriate!
