MasterChef first Aussie show to amass one million Facebook fans
MasterChef has reached one million Facebook fans, claiming title for the first light entertainment show to accumulate such online fandom. The occasion is marked with interactive activity, with MasterChef inviting fans to watch a ‘tribute’ video on their Facebook page.
(Update: Seven’s Home & Away actually hit the milestone last month)
The announcement:
MasterChef Australia has become the first Australian light entertainment program to reach one million Facebook fans.
Established less than four years ago, at the start of the first season of MasterChef Australia in April 2009, MasterChef Australia Facebook “likes” have jumped 60% in the past 12 months and now stand at just over one million.
Network Ten Head of Digital Media, Vincent Dempsey, said: “Masterchef Australia’s digital offering continues to grow year on year, both on the website and across social media. Fans are engaging in huge numbers both during and after the show using social media, and we are delighted to join a very exclusive club of Australian TV shows with more than one million Facebook fans.”
Fans continue to indulge in MasterChef Australia’s digital offering, with nearly 15 million video views and over 33.3 million page views recorded on masterchef.com.au during the 2012 MasterChef Australia series. The MasterChef Australia Twitter account also grew by over 30% this year, and currently has over 60,000 followers.
Shine Australia Executive Producer, Margie Bashfield, said: “We are delighted and proud to have hit a million fans on Facebook. As we move into series five and beyond it is wonderful to see how much love and goodwill there is for the brand in Australia and around the world.”

Interesting comment Melissa.
Home and Away’s Facebook page was launched on November 17 2009, so in the 2+ years since it has finally accumulated over 1 million likes.
Yesterday – Monday September 10 – , Home and Away averaged 1.42 million viewers in just 30 minutes and had just under 2.3 million people tune in at some stage. Yep, that means that in a single minute H&A accumulated more viewers than the Facebook page has accumulated in over two years.
I bet FaceBook would like those sort of numbers!
