McDonald’s in Smurfs tie-in
McDonald’s has launched a new campaign tying in its Happy Meals with the forthcoming Smurfs 2 film.
The animated ad features a cartoon Happy Meal box joining Smurfs characters as they tightrope walk across a clothes line until the heavy box drags them all down.
The promotion also includes a free Smurfs toy and a promotion to win Sea World passes.
The campaign comes from Leo Burnett Sydney with production by Cutting Edge.
I have to say, I HATE these ‘stories’ and McDonalds seems to be a regular repeat offender.
This is a trade NEWS site…read by people in the advertising industry, who put together new campaigns on a daily basis. Telling them (us) that McDonalds, or indeed any other advertiser, have a new TVC going to air is not exciting news. Particualrly if that advertiser is a regular user of TV advertising. Its not even news really is it.
Its a bit like saying “Melbourne baker bakes new cake” in the bakery trade press (if such a thing exists). Newsworthy, it is not.
If you’re going to run these stories, why not put a bit more substance into them – whats their strategy, whats their goal, are they likely to hit that goal? If not why not and what would they want to do differently? What challenges have they faced? How did they overcome them?
Rant over.
