The Hunger Games rakes in almost $12m in highest opening weekend of the year
The penultimate movie of the Hunger Games series raked in almost $12 million on its opening weekend at the Australian box office, the highest of the year so far.
The Hunger Games – Mockingjay Part 1 was shown at 574 screens and took $11.88m, way ahead of the previous best opening weekend of 2014 which saw Transformers: Age of Extinction take $8.8m back in June.
But it fell short of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire which grossed $12.5m when it opened at the back end of 2013.
Space drama Interstellar was the only other movie to break $1m with the sci-fi blockbuster starring Matthew McConoughey maintaining its impressive showing by taking $2.182m across 498 screens. It took total earnings for Interstellar to a little over $13m.
Let’s Be Cops, in its second weekend, drew $761,000 across 261 screens, a sharp drop from last week’s $1.66m.
Gone Girl and Fury continued to tail off with the former drawing $478,000 on 201 screen and Brad Pitt’s war drama on $344,000 on 195 screens. Total box office takings for the two movies now stand at $25.6m and $8.8 respectively.
My Old Lady leapfropped Fury into fourth spot, with the comedy drama starring Kevin Kline and Maggie Smith showing on 94 screens and taking $380,000. It has now taken $1.12m.
The Drop, the final movie made by Sopranos star James Gandolfini, took only $102,000 on 45 screens in its second outing, down from $185,000 in its debut weekend.
