Nine thinks again on its responsibility cuts both ways AFL sex assault KAK row comment
Nine has tonight attempted to extricate itself from a growing row over comments made on this morning’s Kerri-Anne Kennerley show in which the veteran presenter described women who go home with AFL players as “strays”.
The network has now attempted to distance itself from a statement it made shortly after the show, issuing a second statement clarifying its first statement.
Kennerley had as a guest on the show Peter “Spida” Everitt who had made outspoken Twitter comments yesterday suggesting that women needed to “learn” what to expect if they went home with football players late at night. His comments followed an allegation of sexual assault involving two Collingwood players.
Apparently sympathising with his view, Kennerley told him: “They put themselves in harms’ way by picking up strays… Girls have been throwing themselves at famous sports people for years.”
After the show Nine issued a statement saying: “In relation to the ‘stray’ term used, responsibility cuts both ways with these sort of things, and not with just the one party. What she was speaking to Spida about was the fact that not one party can be blamed for this. The responsibility lies with the girls as well as with the guys when you’re talking about alcohol-fuelled situations at three o’clock in the morning.”
But after a growing online backlash, Nine tonight put out a new statement saying:
This morning on Kerri-Anne, a comment was made referring to women who go out late at night with AFL players as “strays”. This was in a conversation between Kerri-Anne Kennerley and Peter “Spida” Everitt.
A statement was then issued after the interview in which a spokesperson for Kerri-Anne said: “Responsibility cuts both ways with these sorts of situations, and not just one party. We should always hear both sides of the story before we form an opinion.”
The above statement was by no means meant to play down the very serious allegations of rape and domestic violence. It was in reference to a small segment of the conversation between Spida and Kerri-Anne.
Seriously, these girls are pathetic…going back to a guy’s place could only mean one thing!!

I think Kerry Anne was being nice, seriously any girl that goes home with a guy at 4am, whether they are a footballer or not, what did she really think was going to happen a nice cup of tea…

Wow – yet another media story that will ensure women who have actually been sexually assulted won’t come forward for the fear of being blamed. KAK, I expected more from you! Sure, there are skanky ‘stray’ women around – this doesn’t mean they want to be raped.
Just becuase a woman consents to sex with one man, even if drunk, even if they are a footballer – does not mean she gives consent to shag his mates as well.

Internet logs show News Ltd, made at least four edits to the original KAK-strays story.
In the end, News Ltd rightly censored the debate, by removing the article and reader comments.

So if I go home with a boofy bloke at 4am for a laugh and to continue partying, and he ends up doing rude things to my bum while I’m out of it on the couch, that’s all cool?
You guys serious?

The night i met my partner of now seven years, i went back to his place. I had no intention of sleeping with him. We didn’t. Rather, we watched Rage on the lounge ’til 5 am and talked and heated up some McCains chips in the over. I don’t think it’s wrong men or women to expect this scenario when going back to someone’s house. And if there is an expectation, a no from the other person should suffice. Sexual assault is never a woman’s fault.

Dear god Herald sun reader and shaun – Spida was talking about DRUNK women (reread his tweet). Sometimes they’re not with it enough to know what’s going on. And you were there, were you? You know it for a fact these women knew what was ‘expected of them’. So sad and pathetic people have opinions like yours.

Rapists will rape if they want to rape. Someone who isn’t a rapist can have 50 drunk girls come back to his place at 4am, and if he isn’t a rapist, all those women will be safe.

If I choose to play on a busy road where speeding cars might hit me, I could play there for an hour or more perhaps without being hit. Eventually though, my luck will run out.
As adults, we make choices. Sadly for us all, there are men out there who will try to take advantage of a drunk girl who has flirted with them all night and goes back to his place later that same night, for whatever reason. When both are drunk, signs can very easily be misread. However, even when I have been the most drunk in my life, I could never misunderstand a girl refusing to have sex with me. End of.
If I do not want to run the risk of being hit by a car, I will not play in the road. There are more sensible places to play.

Women shouldn’t get so inebriated that they don’t know what’s going on. Not just because some asshole could take advantage of you, but because you could trip and fall onto the road and be run over by a car or be robbed. As unfortaunte as it is, rapists will rape, cars will drive fast past a pub and robbers will rob.
That said, because a woman goes back to a man’s house does not mean there is an expectation she will sleep with him. Even fi she says “yes i will go back to your house and sleep with you” she may change her mind once she gets these, whether she’s sobered up or simply realised this isn’t a good idea. And it should end there.

There are two issues that the commentators on the story above and on TV seem to have missed.
1 We don’t know the facts about the events, the facts about the consent given or withdrawn. Until we do know, comment is merely speculation on possible and unknown events.
2 At all times, respect for the individuals involved and for the legal process means we should withhold judgement and comment until the facts are known.
To do otherwise is to engage in often snide and unpleasant put-downs that may make us feel superior to any allegedly involved, but shows no respect for others nor consideration for the outcomes – legal or personal – that may follow.
The best advice is simply to not comment on this until the facts are known and, perhaps, properly tested at trial.

I wonder what Rebecca Wilson has to say about all this……
I reckon if a gang of women sexually abused a man Rebecca would still find a reason for it being the blokes fault.
