Seinfeld, schmeinfeld
There was an entertaining double page profile of the US comedian and actress Janeane Garofalo in Fairfax’s Good Weekend magazine on Saturday.
Writer Helen Pitt recounts in her intro how Garofalo was running late to their interview in New York: “It could be a scene from Seinfeld or a skit from Saturday Night Live, both shows in which she has starred.”
Which does make one wonder who Pitt thought she was interviewing – apart from a small role in two episodes, Garofalo has never actually been in Seinfeld.
Admittedly she didn’t quite star in them, but they were quite good episodes – I think she was the female Jerry, wasn’t she?
But I’m not sure being a few minutes late for an interview would have made a skit on SNL. Not quite comedy gold there. More like the only vaguely interesting thing in an otherwise routine interview.

Hi Dr Mumbo,
Janeane Garafalo was in Seinfeld – she played Jerry’s fiancee in two episodes in 1996.
They broke up because their personalities were identical. She was the female Jerry!

Hi Paris,
You may not have read the last line closely enough: “a small role in two episodes”.
Two episodes out of 180 doesn’t make you a star of the show. Otherwise Merrick Watts would be able to claim that he was a star of Underbelly.

Watching Seinfeld last night, Tuesday, April 14, on TV1, Janeane appeared as Jerry’s girlfriend Jeannie Steinman in the famous episode called The Invitations: when George’s fiancee Susan dies after licking the cheap and toxic glue on their wedding invitations. Feeling the pressure of coupledom, Jerry proposed to Jeannie, a mirror of himself, something he regretted after George became single again.
This was a substantial role for Janeane, and while she wasn’t one of the four “stars” of the show, she wasn’t just a face in the diner either.

Hi Gladys,
Funnily enough, I was watching too! My favourite bit about George’s celebration of singledom is “being able to bite into a hunk of cheese like it’s an apple”. Now that’s single life.
Cheers,
