The Cancer Council of New South Wales has worked with Naked to produce this spoof rap video which has already generated around nearly 20,000 views on YouTube:

“We felt it was important to engage with young people about skin cancer in an effective way. Skin cancer is on the increase and young people are particularly at risk,” saidProfessor Jeannette Ward, director of health strategies for Cancer Council NSW.
She adds: “The song’s satire seems to be resonating with youth across the country and has stirred quite a bit of debate and discussion both online and off, which is our major objective. We want to keep skin cancer top of mind with young people this Summer.”
Not sure how viral it will be…good creative content, but just goes for too long. You could cut this to 60 secs and it would probably have just as much effect and increase virility. There’s only so long you can listen to that rapper

Agreed – I only got half way through before I’d seen enough. That said, it’s already egenrated 18,000 hits in four days, which is a helluv alot more than most so-called virals.
Yep too long but the “it’s a beautiful day… for cancer” is catchy enough to include in vernacular and create conversation (I can see this particularly working with mums and dads… even though this isn’t aimed at them).

Not quite sure how this is engaging… I think I’d file it under “Wanky”.
I’m with Nathan on this one, the line’s a good one but another rap parody… seriously!?

Hey guys,
Glad to see we are all on the same page in terms of the good cause behind it. @Matt the reason that it is so long, is because it is an actually song, it has been produced by Lyrics Born and Al Bino who is an actually rapper. The song is planned to be performed at a number of summer festivals, hence the length.
Full Disclosure: The Population is working on the social media strategy for Al Bino and the Cancer Council.

Fair to say it hasn’t made the viral leap. From the start of last week’s just under 20,000 views on YouTube, it’s now ticked over to 21,800 or so.
Let’s see whether festival season gives it a second life…
