NFSA to digitise 40,000 hours of archives
The National Film and Sound Archive will begin the digitisation of 40,000 hours of audiovisual material from its extensive collection.
‘We’re digitising these works to preserve their usable lives, not just to keep a record of them, so preserving their original quality is paramount,” said Greg Moss, manager of the Digital Media Preservation Project.
The NFSA has recruited the services of content digitisation and migration company DAMsmart. It’s a process that the company says “is likely to take many years”, to create digital copies of content that includes material which is deteriorating, or available in outdated formats.
The digitisation will not be automated, but the technology utilised for the project (SAMMA Solo) will analayse every frame of the material to flag quality issues, which can then be addressed by operators.
