Innocean’s James Welch moves to APAC boss of data launch backed by ‘big advertising group’

james welchAd agency Innocean’s new business director James Welch has quit the agency for a mystery new role as Asia Pacific regional director of a technology company.

Welch declined to reveal his new employer, although it has a data focus and is related to the media and advertising industry. He will be based in Singapore, and the Australian market will be among his responsibilities. Welch leaves Australia later today.

He told Mumbrella: “The opportunity to build a digital media innovations team across Asia Pacific, backed by a big holding company, is exciting.

He added: “Data is everything, but most people aren’t yet making the most of that. ‘Yet’ is a big word now that we are going through massive change in the comms landscape.

“It’s time for the agency model to change. My quest is to help creative agencies get closer to data – that could be part of their new model.”

Prior to Innocean, Welch worked at Oddfellows in Sydney. Prior to that he worked in the UK at agencies including Y&R, Vizeum and Mindshare.

In a post on his blog, Welch wrote: “It’s still an adland role. The business I’m joining entails me using the skills and expertise that I’ve built up over the years. Media planner turned brand consultant turned path-to-purchase advocate. And it builds on this, by adding a cutting edge technology platform created over the last few years under the awning of a big advertising group.”
