Great Australian Bakeoff debuts strongly for Foxtel as 800 Words see audience climb

Foxtel brought back The Great Australian Bakeoff last night two years after Nine ditched the show after just one season after it failed to find a strong audience.

The show, which sees Maggie Beer and Matt Moran put contestants through a series of cake and bread based challenges was the most-watched thing on pay-TV last night with an audience of 104,000 tuning in nationally to Lifestyle Food at 8.30pm.great australian bakeoff

Foxtel appears to have stuck more closely to the formula which has made The Great British Bakeoff one of the most popular shows for the BBC in the UK, including introducing quirky comedians Mel Buttle and Claire Hooper as the hosts.

On free-to-air TV Channel Channel Seven’s Erik Thomson drama 800 Words actually saw a slight lift in its audience to 1.082m from last week’s 1.057m at 8.40pm according to OzTam overnight metro ratings.

Last week it also added 254,000 last week on catch up to a consolidated metro total of 1.309m.

While it beat Nine’s new episode of The Big Bang Theory which aired at 8.40pm and managed 1.018m the comedy show dominated all the advertising demographics.

However 800 Words and a slight lift for The X Factor’s results show on last week with 982,000 to win the 7.30pm battle gave Seven the audience share win for the night with 23.7 per cent.

For Ten The Biggest Loser Families managed 527,000 at 7.30pm while The Block on Nine had 949,000.

The news battle saw Seven News take the honours with its 6pm bulletins getting 1.031m and its 6.30pm bulletin and Today Tonight offering managing 1.012m. Nine’s 6pm bulletin had 968,000 and its 6.30pm showing had 987,000.

Nine saw ratings for Bakeoff drop from 1.119m on debut in 2013 to 760,000 for the grand finale.
