The Revenant and Sisters both top the $3m mark but Star Wars still tops the Box Office
Leonardo Di Caprio’s new movie The Revenant took $3.9m in box office sales and Tina Fey/Amy Poehler comedy Sisters took $3.2m in sales but neither could stall the momentum of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The sci-fi film has retained its top billing at the Australian box office but over the weekend be did see its sales slow, raising doubt about whether it will topple the record set by Avatar.
Since Boxing Day the Star Wars franchise has taken just under $80m, with $79.8m in tickets sold, but looks set to fall short of the extra $25m it needs to pass the record set by Avatar in 2009.
Star Wars had sales of $4.9m over the weekend from 592 screens, well down on last week, but is still being shown on more screens than The Revenant and Sisters combined (247 screens and 290 screen respectively).
Will Ferrell film Daddy’s Home had $2.43m in sales to bring it to a total of $14.9m while children’s films The Good Dinosaur and Alvin and The Chipmunks both took $1.3m each.
Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts movie took just over $1m over the weekend while the rehash of Point Break took $990,000 taking its earnings to $4.3m in two weeks.
