Seven Year Switch kicks off early as Seven ups the ante on relationship shows

Seven will tonight ignore the TV industry’s conventional thinking and debut the second season of Seven Year Switch six days before the official ratings period resumes.

The move will see Seven debut the show – which features four couples whose relationships are in trouble temporarily paired with somebody else – against the less competitive counter-programming of the Easter Holiday.

It will be up against the season finals of Nine’s drama House Husbands and Modern Family on Ten.

Last year, Seven Year Switch launched a month earlier, debuting with 858,000 metropolitan viewers.

Both Seven and Nine have been aggressively programming relationship shows. Nine’s Married At First Sight grew its audience this year, while the second season of Seven’s First Dates is also currently on air.

Meanwhile Nine, has not yet announced the airdate of its new relationship show The Last Resort, however, Mumbrella understands it will premiere in Q2.

Commenting ahead of the premiere of The Last Resort, Hamish Turner, Nine’s program director said on a Nine blog the show would deliver the “same demographic profile” as Married at First Sight.

“TV is a game of momentum and the main thing is for us to come out really strong after the Easter break,” said Turner.

“We will capitalise on the success of Married at First Sight by bringing out Last Resort, a new format in the relationship space.”

“We think this program will deliver the same demographic profile as Married at First Sight and be strong with women, strong with 16-39s and 25-54s, and also grocery buyers with kids.”
