Arts website Daily Review apologises to Geoffrey Rush
Independent arts site, Daily Review, has publicly apologised over an article published last week covering the Daily Telegraph’s claims against actor Geoffrey Rush.
Mumbrella believes Daily Review was asked by Rush’s lawyers last Monday to amend the site’s stories and to prominently publish an apology to the actor.
The apology follows Rush launching defamation action against the Daily Telegraph on Friday over their front page story alleging misconduct by the prominent actor.
In Daily Review’s weekly Rundown newsletter on Saturday, editor Raymond Gill wrote: “Actor Geoffrey Rush yesterday announced he was suing Sydney’s Daily Telegraph for its stories about his alleged “inappropriate behaviour” at the Sydney Theatre Company. Daily Review has heard from his lawyers too.
“Last week, we mistakenly used the term “sexual harassment” in a story about the implications of the incident for the STC. We should have used the term “inappropriate behaviour” and for this we unreservedly apologise.”
Gill, the founding editor of Daily Review, established the then Private Media owned site in 2013 with the “aim of enlivening Australian arts and entertainment coverage with engaging, informed and conversational commentary, reporting and reviews.”
The site quickly attracted criticism for not being able to pay contributors and in 2015, Gill bought Daily Review off Private Media – which also publishes Crikey, The Mandarin, Smart Company and Startup Smart – for an undisclosed sum to become owner and publisher.
Gill has been closely covering the issue of misconduct in the theatre industry, including a story published late last month criticising the Sydney Theatre Company’s management for their alleged clumsy handling of grievances.
Mumbrella has contacted Rush’s legal representatives for comment.
The New Daily and the Daily Review are entirely different sites. Probably quite important to get that right, and change the image, when the article is materially about legal issues.
