ABC’s At Home With Julia pulls in over 1m
The debut of the ABC’s comedy series At Home With Julia, a send-up of Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s life behind closed doors, received an audience of over 1 million viewers last night.
The first episode of the four-part series fetched 1.066 million, according to preliminary metro ratings from OzTam.
There was a mixed reaction amongst Twitter users with some praising the show and others slamming it. @Steph_Philbrick Tweeted, “I really, really wanted to dislike #AtHomeWithJulia but some of its political commentary has caught me off guard :),” while @CrowEating said “#AtHomeWithJulia Labor plot to make her look good? No, ABC attempt at a sitcom. Not British or American humour, I’d call it Canberran comedy.”
The show aired at 9:30 following The Gruen Transfer at 9 which pulled in 1.164 million.
Spicks & Specks at 8:30 also edged over the 1 million mark and ABC News pulled in 942,000.
The presence of the four shows in the top 10 lead ABC1 to a second place share of 15.7% behind Seven’s 24.9%.
The top show for the night was once again The X Factor on Seven where contestants were sent off to singing bootcamp with their celebrity judges. It’s audience was 1.527 million.

Not even Margart Thatcher had to put up with such rampant ridicule.

Best of luck to this show. Shows a lot of promise and I hope for the sake of Australian comedy that it enjoys great success.

Francis, you clearly never watched Spitting Image in the 80s! I actually thought it was OK, some clever references to recent events, lots of throw away gags. Very gentle, but actually quite funny. Be interesting to see if they’ve used all their best gags in the first episode.

I didn’t think it was ridiculing her. I thought there were some almost touching moments. The portrayal of the three independent/ex-National knuckleheads was a real highlight. Bit thin on many levels, but not a disappointment was my verdict.

Hey Francis, it’s satire. And clearly portrayed as such. Personally I laughed my arse off.

I enjoyed it and its definitely going to go on the up next week.

I was disappointed but, assuming it will either get better or worse, will probably tune in next week

OMG Francis: rotten crique; rotten sense of humour.
The caricaturing, casting, acting and scripting for the PM and for Bob Katter, in particular, were excellent. maybe it will be a challenge to keep the standard, episode after episode, but a great start.
‘Taking the mickey’ is a laudable Australian tradition. It’s one small but strong defence we have always had against fascism. Hopefully Paul Howes watched it and he might learn not to make such a posturing goose of himself, as he did in Monday night’s Q&A

hear hear Peter, Paul Howes came across as a complete wanker on Q&A, especially when he demanded Clive Palmer show some respect to the PM……just like he did with Rudd.

Yep, not a bad show. I’ll give it another go next week. Loved the portrayal of Katter…what a kak! Maybe Francis should take a look at himself.

Francis – you’re humourless, sour, tragic. It’s you, sir/madam, that should be taken offline.
I’m a woman, a Gillard fan, a Labor voter, and I thought it was, easily, the best written sitcom I have seen on Australian television since, at least, ‘Frontline’.
I don’t even really believe you believe what you wrote about it.
