Letters to Juliet
Courtesy of Hoyts Distribution, we have passes for Letters to Juliet, starring Vanessa Redgrave, Amanda Seyfried, Gael Garcia Bernal and Australian actor Christopher Egan.
When a young American travels to Verona, she joins a group of volunteers who respond to letters to Shakespeare’s Juliet seeking advice about love. After answering one letter dated from 1957, she inspires its author to travel to Italy in search of her long-lost love.
This is Vanessa Redgrave’s show. She’s an absolute delight, and the main reason to see this film – having her real-life husband Franco Nero as her romantic interest makes her presence even more fascinating.
Other than Redgrave, this film hardly qualifies as a romantic comedy, which is how it’s being sold. It’s not particularly funny, and the love story between Seyfried and Egan feels forced and slows down the show, fighting for attention with the more interesting plot line of Redgrave’s search for her 1950s love.
