Screen Australia launches US showcase

The Waiting CityScreen Australia will present the USA–Australian Film Showcase, a quarterly season of three Australian films not previously released in the US.

The program will be presented in partnership with New York distributor Emerging Pictures, across 21 states, starting with The Waiting City, Accidents Happen and Charlie and Boots in June 2010.

Emerging Pictures’ digital cinema networks could see the Australian films screened in up to 60 cities, but the minimum amount agreed is 12 venues. The company will select the titles, and oversee promotion alongside filmmakers and Screen Australia.

The agency’s marketing director  Kathleen Drumm, said that the initiative aims to provide an opportunity for US audiences to experience Australian films, at a time when few of these are finding traditional US distribution.

Encore has contacted Screen Australia for comment on the agency’s financial commitment, and how it plans to coordinate and supervise promotional activities to ensure that the showcase fulfills its goal. More to follow.
