Screen Australia to review TV funding

Screen Australia has announced a review of funding for television content (drama, children’s TV and documentaries), consulting with the industry during July and August.

“The television environment is changing dramatically and Screen Australia has not looked at how we fund television drama since the creation of the new organisation,” admitted CEO Ruth Harley. “This review will allow us to develop a new blueprint for Screen Australia’s support of the television production industry.”

The agency reported an investment of $35m to almost 80 TV programs in 2009/2010, and has allocated $35m for the 2010/11 financial year.

The review is expected to look at the agency’s role in development and production of TV programming, funding eligibility requirements such as minimum licence fees, hold back provisions and market place attachments. The National Documentary Program will also be evaluated, including funding to broadcasters as part of the review.

Written submissions close on July 30, and the outcomes of the review will be released in November, with the aim to apply the resulting program guidelines as of July 1, 2011. For more details on how to participate, visit the review website.

Additionally, the agency’s new Terms of Trade will take effect next week (1 July 2010) and apply to projects approved for funding from that date. The changes can be found here.
