Mad Max: Fury Road holds off Spy to top box office for second consecutive week
Mad Max: Fury Road has topped the Australian box office for the second week in a row, taking $4.169m from 473 screens to hold off new Melisa McCarthy film Spy.
The fourth film in the Mad Max franchise – produced 30 years after the third instalment – has earned $12.601m since it opened.
Fox flick Spy, which also stars Jason Statham, came second over the weekend, earning $3.623m off 377 screens.
Rebel Wilson’s Pitch Perfect 2 ranked third, taking $3.223 in its third week to reach $22.529m in total revenue.
Helen Mirren stars in Woman in Gold, which took $1.085m on 234 screens at the box office.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron was the fifth-most popular film, earning $1.084m on 243 screens to see its total reach $38.585m.
Horror film Poltergeist by Fox opened this weekend, taking $755,306, followed by A Royal Night Out, which took $322,792.
Indian film Tanu Weds Manu Returns also opened, taking $196,832 on 19 screens.
Unfriended took $101,907 to reach $2.916m, and Fast and Furious 7 took $93,530 in its seventh week in cinemas to reach $43.241m.
