Gruen Transfer challenges agencies to take the piss… and sell it
Tonight’s Gruen Transfer on the ABC sees The Faith Agency from Melbourne take on Sydney’s The Brand Shop with the challenge of persuading the public to buy bottled urine.
The Faith Agency’s entry in The Pitch:
Tonight’s episode of the adland inside view also features discussions around the marketing of televisions, includign 3D sets. The programem is on at 9pm on ABC1.
The Gruen Producers give a little money to cover voiceover (I think).
I’m curious who pays for the director, talent, lighting, DOP, location, edit/post, label design etc etc. Some are quite a big production.
Are the agencies footing the bill for the ABC content or do they beg favours from suppliers?
And do agencies who provide Pitch content get a cut from DVD/download sales?
Anyone know?

It’s all gratis. I know. We just did it. Not grumbling tho. It’s about relationships

Surely the only one who benefits is the show’s producer(s)?
What am I missing here?

i can just see this ad going viral on youtube and some poor sod will go out to buy the product thinking it’s real well I guess it is, it’s just not bottled and marketed as such – yet

@My ABC: Surely as a basic extension of logic, the taxpayer also benefits from not having to pay costs for aforementioned stuff [director, talent, lighting, DOP, location, edit/post, label design etc etc.]
For the agency, there’s also the prestige/publicity of being on a popular program, giving creatives some creative freedom and potential bragging rights. Asking for profits from the DVD sales would be like asking for money from a potential client to cover your costs for a new pitch – good luck to you.

For me this is typical of the agencies asking for user generated content. All it does is cheapen then skills that content makers and technicians spend years honing.
Knowing this, surely “Zapruders other films”, an independent production house no less should pay for the production costs because really the only benefit goes to the producers of the show and the agencies who throw there names all over it.

Are you guys kidding? It’s an ad for the ad agencies- of course they pay for everything, jeez.

How about Gruen and the agencies focus on some meaningful briefs that actually deliver real benefit. All this creative brain power, surely this could be put to better use than selling urine. There’s plenty of real life issues that this vehicle could benefit.
Surpising that the ABC with their supposed social conscience is driving this.
Seems a waste of good talent and all a bit of a toss to me

REI,
Taxpayers? What do tax payers have to do with this REI?
Are you from the country Queensland?
This is what would happen if The Gruen Producers decided to offer some money up to pay for the ‘aforementioned’ group you feel is benefiting without money.
The show would cost more, The ABC would look at the ‘Ratings’, replacing money from a lower rating show and allocate the extra production money to GRUEN.
Thus? Keeping the ratings.
The idea that the agency or the Production Company whom threw all their resources at this ‘useless’ brief / pitch for Prestige is one response, however it would also be good to see some money from me, The TaxPayer, going to a Director or agency or the film Industry to support the production for the show!!
Makes sense to me. I think you’re a fool, maybe one who likes Martini’s (and only one OLIVE) and then blogs. Think about a few things. What does it bring to the people that contribute to the content of a GOVT backed production? It brings some prestige. Some. However what it really brings is ratings!! Something the ABC needs to keep high each to get budgets for the next year.
The Director doesn’t get a credit on National TV. Would it help to get one on national TV? The audience which is mostly industry I imagine.
One last thing, before I turn on REI.
Can I ask that the Producers use this PITCH part of the show for some good? ( Charities are tax breaks Producers?) Perhaps a charity? Something. This would make the whole thing a lot more beneficial to those investing in the ratings of the ABC and one short, now a little chubby little producer? Mr Denton.
Not Piss.
So here is my thought to you REI.
A. You’re clearly not in the industry.
B. You’ve not ever had to ask a production company for a freebie.
C. You really don’t know the Australian advertising seen to well.
D. Try and be constructive when blogging. I read it part of the ethics of Blogging.
Ahh..I could go all the 26 characters for you. However I doubt it would help your outlook REI.
To everyone else on this blog then. It would makes sense to at least, very least, the Producers, who benefit from the free content, to credit everyone involved. Or pay them. Paying may make better TV. Better Ratings.
It’s been fun and a pleasure to blog today and wish REI all the best with her specialty soap; located on The High Street of Mount Isa.
