AWU tells voters: Beware The Abbott Family
The Australian Workers Union has launched an attack ad on the Liberal party, characterising it as The Abbott family.
The online election ad has already demonstrated its PR value – it featured in tonight’s Seven News.
Pity their unable to spell. Take a look at the 19-second mark.

not voting for unions to run the country – dont care what they have to say

I wonder what Warner Bros will have to say about the flagrant use of their copyrighted material? Music. lyrics, format, the lot.
And no, the “parody” defence won’t cut it in this context.
I’d give it say……about 24 hours before the lawyers’ writs start thumping on the AWU’s doorstep. They’re gonna need deep pockets.

“Pity their unable to spell”
You meant “they’re unable..” right?

I love you people.
I wish I was in advertising.
Think about this video – people know and love the reference, it’s an apposite, it’s a jingle too OMG it rocks.
And it was cheap.
And you, YOU, you know who I’m talking about. All you can do is whine about spelling and worry about lawyers. You are a ‘big’ advertising agencies wet dream. You will turn out ‘lawyer safe’ bland generic un-offensive mush. And cover for your lack of talent by pointing to the ‘risk’ and then dwell on details like ‘spelling’ when the thing does get up.
Boy, you must feel like an iidiot now huh? (the extra ‘i’ is not a spelling mistake it is for Siimon Reynolds, I love you Siimon, long time, how’s tricks?)
Where was I?
Mmmm, oh yeah…
How transparent are you? You, must feel like a fool. Standing there with a dictionary clasped like a fig leaf. A small fig leaf.
Give me a job people. I can do better than this guy. Really. Sure I can’t spell either. But at least I’d give you something pretty to look at.

WTF?

Lavinia please take your medication soon. This puerile attempt at humour is highly consistent with the dross usually served up by the union movement

it was a little bit of fun that made me smile, just what the election needs

How’s the hangover today Lavinia?

Watcher, you just got PUNK’D!!!!!!!!!!!

Scarily the AWU have deep pockets, who do you think is funding this election anyway…..?

Lavinia for PM! Props on the link also. Amaze!

C’mon. This is funny. I’m a lib voter, but it is funny. I wish – the Libs did it. Fits more with their point that Julia & Kev are of the same breed. What the Libs need is a third party to throw their stones – so they can still claim to have a clean election campaign also. Oh and Lavinia, yikes – take a breather..

One of the better party political ads. If only the AWU could keep their members at work or end strikes with the ease that they managed to get this to air.. Or resolve some of their disputes with the speed they managed to get this into the domain.

Why doesn’t mumbrella contact WBros and ask them whether its been paid for?
Funny or not, people appropriating copyrighted material under the guise of advertising does the industry no favours.
if the music and characters have been paid for – fine.

It’s a clever bit of fun. Good political advertising.
But I always feel a bit uncomfortable when a pressure group (union OR big business) tells me how to vote.

I seriously doubt that even AWU would believe that they could just snaffle this music and Characters etc. I know that Time Life have been flogging off /licensing anything they can in back catalogue for any price for any period of time. I think you could grab a short term licence for a Cowboy show from the 60’s and do the same with the labor party for not a lot of money… So when a raw hide ad hits the airwaves next week I’m going to be demanding IP $$$!!!!

Lavinia, if I ran an agency I would totally hire you. Love the blog.

i think you’ll find its not WB who own this… Orion was the original owner…. Paramount did the movie… anyway… if you are a lawyer and want to “chase an ambulance”… look here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057729/

Oh my gosh that pic of Hockey is priceless…the whole thing is hilarious!
You can ridicule this ad and vote for the Libs — what do I care??? It’s a free country but if you do, I’ve got 2 words for you – “Barnaby” and “Joyce” The jokes on you buddy!

Nice one Dino, lets vote for the miners they are much more cleverer. Doesn’t this creative throw down the gauntlet? Now moving forward…………

some of the comments you people leave on this website makes this whole industry look like a bunch of whining morons. Maybe thats what we are, but come on, at least try and get over yourselves.
All you do is pi$$, moan and criticise, then completely digress from the point at hand – I mean seriously , its a political dig in the ribs of the liberal party and you start arguing over spelling and who has the copy right’s to the frickin’ addams family theme song? Is that really a) the point and b) important?

Neither amusing nor informative.
Worst still lines such as: “tricky and sneaky”, “dishonest and cheeky” and “crony and phoney” are basically personal attacks. And how many more elections will the workchoices card try to be played? *yawn*
Playing the man not the policy is the weakest and most pathetic way to try and market in politics. This ad shows this perfectly. As a marketer I would be embarrassed to present this up to a client. This is just dumbed down fodder for the sheeple.

Pedants putting people down for centuries to cover up their lack of talent. There is always incorrect what is new. Our language is grossly inconsistent with spelling. We have been squeezing 48 phonemes into 26 letters ever since we adopted our version of the Roman alphabet and then conning kids into thinking that phonics can be used for reading then abusing them when they don’t get it. Want to spell fish. Try using the letters “ghoti”!!!
I think the add was funny. As for using jingles, political parties and pressure groups have been doing that for ages.

cheeky yes, but tbh i’d rather parties invest in publicising what their policies are so we can make informed votes instead of low blows, albeit in an entertaining fashion. i prefered the GetUp “fake Gillard talking about climate like Dare Iced Coffee ads” one better anyways (https://www.getup.org.au/campaign/ClimateActionNow&id=1181). unfortunately all this is testament to “The media’s focus on personality over policy” – http://web.overland.org.au/201.....-refugees/ (and no, i didn’t pen that).

did they remove it so quickly because of copyright or the bad spellingz?

TT, take a chill pill, alls fair in love and war, providing you don’t offend any farrrr right wingers. I think the real issue here is that the ALP beat the other ALP (Australian Liberal Party) to the punch, thats probably the real reason behind all the whining and winging and lawer speak. The Abbott Family clip is by far more interesting than anything I’ve heard out of either camp so far. By the way TT, I suppose you did’nt see the pathetic attempt by Costello at immitating Gillard’s voice, get a life, take your medication and have a good long lie down. Good Luck !!
