Turnbull resigns as communications minister as bid to overturn Prime Minister Abbott begins
Communications minister Malcolm Turnbull has announced his resignation as communications minister as part of a bid to retake the leadership of the Liberal Party.
Announcing that he will try to take the leadership from Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Turnbull told a press conference: “I will also resign as communications minster.”
Turnbull was made communications minister two years ago this week after the Coalition took power from Labor. The majority of Turnbull’s efforts in the role were dedicated to driving through the government’s National Broadband Network rollout.

Turnbull’s recommendations to reform media ownership laws were reportedly blocked by Abbott. Should Turnbull find himself as Australia’s new Prime Minister, media reforms would be more likely to go back on the agenda.
