Ten turns off Video Hits after 24 years
As the axe wields at Ten, the network’s music video show Video Hits is to cease transmission after 24 years of broadcasting.
The show, which Ten credits with launching the careers of Missy Higgins, Angus and Julia Stone and Art Vs Science, will last be broadcast Saturday 6 August with a retrospective of the best moments from the last two decades.
Video Hits executive producer Rachel Moor said: “We plan to leave the music landscape as we arrived – with a bang! It will be a big celebration that honours what the shows achieved over the years, what it has brought to music fans and the music industry as a whole.”

Wow. It must have been some the cheapest $/hour programming around?
I guess the kids are all going to the Internets these days…

i’m pretty sure Triple J launched the careers of Missy Higgins, Angus and Julia Stone and Art vs Science

To say that Video Hits launched the careers of any of those artists is laughable. If anyone is to be given the credit for launching the careers of those three it artists it would be Triple J who allowed both Missy Higgins and Art vs Science to gain a much wider audience through Unearthed.

Regional viewers haven’t seen Video Hits for a few years now – SC Ten has their own music video programs that they broadcast instead

This illustrates the Australian television landscape has changed. Network Ten are making adjustments removing a iconic program which has been pulling all youth audience on a weekend morning for the past 20 plus years to bed. Another bad mistake causing the Ten line up to look weaker then it already is….

I suspect this was a case of record company revenue drying up/costs etc, but what hasn’t helped the numbers is the production values often displayed by Vid Hits in all my recent memory of the show, say 5 years or so. No editing of long chunks of interviews that clearly weren’t watched back, too many links shot in the stairwell or an office at Ten with a ‘lamp’ as lighting, festival links shot away from the festival (and not because of noise). Just being on 10 isn’t enough, music TV affords you the opportunity to be dynamic with your production, and young audiences have too much choice for music to be served lazy TV, and often competing music channels. I’m out of the demo, but my nephew and niece, 15 and 16, say they’ve never really watched it, and crikey they watch a lot of TV.

can’t wait for the 90 minute PRO-ACTIVE ad and the George Foreman Grill to replace Video Hits. Bring back HOT DOGS UP EARLY.

With Sports Tonight also being axed, as well as Ten passing on AFL rights and their dedicated sports channel One dropping more and more sports every week, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the new owners of Ten also ran some sort of competing pay sports platform…
Is anyone at the ACCC awake?
Sports Tonight (and Video Hits for that matter) is one of the cheapest shows on television – most of its content will still need to be produced for news bulletins anyway and the rest of the show gets nicked from rival networks and off the satellite. What management think they’ll be saving is anyone’s guess.

This ‘show’ has seriously devolved over the years, and now Youtube has completely displaced it.

Adam P,
You are likely close to the money.
But if they’re encouraging Music and Sports fans to Pay, who does that leave Ten to serve?
1 seems to be becoming like Dave in the UK, a market that is poorly served in Australia, at least by News owned channels.

Video hits was the only reason I would put the tv on in the daytime on the weekends (cricket / unfolding tragedy on the news aside…)
Not a bad thing, it means that I do not turn on the tv and get outdoors into the sun and make the most of a day in Sydney 🙂
Daytime weekend tv – who have to be kidding – do people watch any of the other tripe?

AdGrunt, I’d take a punt (even though I don’t have a license…) and say they’re not that concerned with what Ten gets left with. Get in – pillage and plunder – get out is probably the plan.

Hot Dogs up late was awesome Merrick, but not sure 10 has the budget now to pay for such a big production.
Maybe it can be ‘Up late with Lachlan’

Nooooo this is the only way I know that the ‘kids’ are listening to these days

Message for Logic,
I think you mean ‘up date with Lachlan’ to borrow a quote from Roy & HG.
What about repeats of The Circle and some GMA John Foreman highlights back to back with Guthy Renker’s all new amazing Ab-Blaster 4000.
We all want more Chrissie Swann in that Snuggie – I know I do.

Adam Paul seems on the money,
Would be interested to know what Lachlans strategy is – YOUTH , Reality , DIY ?
The low budget , high EBITDA formula worked for years for this network.

@ Outdoor Aus…. Here’s a challenge for you outdoor guy. We advertise our website Yapping Mad only in off peak TV. No SEO. No other media at all. it works well enough. I have a feeder site called http://www.petproductshere.com.au. I can tell from google where the buyers come from. You advertise PPH on any outdoor medium and I will share the results with you and show you just how well you do against off peak TV. PPH has even been optimised for google etc so you even have a head start.
Are you big enough for the challenge??
