Telstra denies redundancies after restructure
Telstra has denied rumours that redundancies would result from the merger of three of its digital businesses into one, announced last week.
The Telstra Advertising Network was formed from the consolidation of Sensis Digital Media, Telstra Classifieds and BigPond Advertising.
Among those rumoured to be leaving the company is Mark Shaw, who is currently in an interim role as national sales director.
Mark Shaw denied the rumours. He told Mumbrella: “No, I haven’t left. I can catagorically say I’m not going anywhere.”
He added that there would be no other redundancies at Telstra Advertising Network for the time being.
“There’ll be no mass exodus of staff. Everyone’s pretty upbeat. We’ve told everyone what we’re doing and will be very transparent about the process. We’ll be meeting with the heads of agencies in due course.”
A company spokesperson added: “Mark will be with us for the immediate future.”
The merger is being led by Michael Padden, Telstra’s head of digital advertising businesses.
In a statement last week, he said: “We have a great start with our recently announced five year partnership with the AFL featuring live games on mobile, tablet and IPTV. We’re going to build on this by focusing our sales strategy on improved brand engagement through integrated content and sponsorships and improved audience engagement through leading data and intelligent targeting.”
Telstra’s online brands include BigPond, AFL.com.au and NRL.com.au. The company’s intention is to be the leader in sport, mobile and IPTV.
What about the 26 redundancies last week? Shame on you Telstra

Wow what a load of PR bull, I can confirm that i am one of the many made redundant. There were no smiles but doom and gloom all round… Thanks Telstra for respecting those who gave their all and were given the boot… and tried to cover it out. cheers.

hmmm…that’s not what the Sensis Digital Team are saying…perhaps voluntary redundancies are not considered redundancies in Telstra’s eyes??

Terrible management…. Be honest, the place is going downhill and there were a load of redundancies last week. Shame on all of you. Also a shame to hear some of the decent ones going.

I don’t know much about this. i have a question:
Was it working having three digital divisions, or by merging them into one will this unite Telstra’s digital efforts and build a more effective business?
If so why is it a good idea to merge?
If not, why isn’t it a good idea to merge?
If I am missing the point, please enlighten me?
Disclaimer: (I am truly interested to understand this subject more. I am not from Telstra.)

Funny you quote this “There’ll be no mass exodus of staff. Everyone’s pretty upbeat. We’ve told everyone what we’re doing and will be very transparent about the process. We’ll be meeting with the heads of agencies in due course.”
The staff are unhappy, demotivated and unsure if they have a job. There are still cuts in sales to be made an internal source has made. Stop the lies aqs you are playing with peoples lives here.

Dear SDM, MediSmart, what do you call yourselves now?
From the group management of an agency can you please clarify your position?
1. Why have 7 individual staff came to my agency and directors inquiring about jobs – and when prompted why do you want to leave – they say they were made redundant? Are 7 staff fibbing?
2. Why is someone from a classified background been placed in charge of a predominantly agency facing business, being situated in the 2nd largest ad market, not Sydney?
3. When will this mysterious Michal Padden show himself?
Clarification would be required at this moment.
Further to that – until such time as SDM, MediaSmart, Telstra can come clean on this situation – the directive will be –
a. Do not trust this organization and its representation in market
b. No clear fundamentals, mission statement or understanding
c. What’s a publisher deal?
