Return of Solo Man wins Mumbrella Ad of the Month
An ad that revived an 1980’s mascot has won Mumbrella’s February Ad of the Month.
The ad for Schweppes lemon soda Solo sees the return of the Solo Man in Legend of the Lemon Tree.
The ad, created by BMF Melbourne, emerged the winner in a strong field that included the ‘Super Coach’ webisodes for Daily Telegraph and Henry and Aaron’s ‘It’s a snap!’ viral.
The ad was directed by Hamish Rothwell for production company Good Oil.
Dave Klein, ECD of BMF Melbourne at the time said: “I grew up watching Solo Man jump over cliffs, ride wind surfers through the desert and even wrestle crocodiles. Back then he was pretty awesome. Our challenge was to introduce him to a new generation of fans and bring the idea to life of why Solo is the original thirst crusher.”

I was going to vote for it … but after that bloke chasing the barrel uphill (yes – uphill at the 26 second mark) and downhill, I had no idea why in the last shot he finally slapped a Solo sticker on the barrel.

The SOLO TVC is nonsense……sepia toned is a poor choice of color if you want to re introduce a brand to the kaleidoscopic minds on younger “lolly water ” consumers. Also the ad loses all sense of narrative when played in 15 second bites on TV….The creative is simply dull and misses the mark.

Stephen, apparently many disagree with your sad rant.

Hi Rob…….Many people think Chuck Norris made great movies but I can’t see him winning an Academy Award any time soon.As for my critique “sad” is a bit melodramatic it’s just a rant an opinion and one that I think will be confirmed by the poor sales reaction.
