Brisbane launches film-friendly taskforce

Film Brisbane and regional council representatives will meet today in the inaugural South East Queensland Film Friendly Taskforce meeting.

“The attraction of international productions can be volatile and fluctuate with currency rates. Our strength is our network across Brisbane and greater Brisbane and by leading the formation of the South East Queensland Film Friendly Taskforce, we can build a solid regional approach to industry issues,” Film Brisbane director Julie Turpie told Encore.

Film Brisbane was launched in March by Brisbane City Council and Brisbane Marketing, to promote the Queensland capital as a screen production destination and differentiate it from the Gold Coast.

Since then, a Consultative Committee comprising industry members has been established to ensure the new organisation is across industry trends.

“We’ve also had a proactive approach in partnership with the Brisbane City Council filming approvals team to welcome productions to Brisbane and ensure a smooth transition between the public and private sector,” said Turpie when questioned about Film Brisbane’s achievements.

According to Turpie, there is not an agreed set of film-friendly policies for the region, so developing a strategy is one of the main objectives of the Taskforce.

“The response to the Taskforce has been very well received by all the invited Councils as there is a strong desire to move beyond local government boundaries to promote the benefits of the region to the screen industry from a holistic perspective.

“As a number of Queensland local governments were required to amalgamate in 2008, there is an opportunity to revisit filming protocol across the region. At present there is no formal regional strategy to maximise the opportunities across all industry sectors through joint marketing, pooling resources and information sharing,” she explained.

The Taskforce will:

  • Develop a film friendly strategy for the region
  • Investigate the opportunity for consistent location application procedures for filming on land, streets, parks and buildings belonging to Council
  • Include provisions for support of filmmaking in each Council annual plan
  • Revise and implement film friendly guidelines for the region
  • Investigate opportunities to market south east Queensland and position it as premier production destination
