Marketers are motivated by ‘learning new things, not chasing the dollar’ – unlike retailers, finds survey

The chance to learn new skills is a bigger motivator than money for Australia’s marketers, a survey by recruitment firm Michael Page suggests.

The biggest reason why staff are likely to leave their current role is to broaden their experience (34%), ranking above gaining more seniority (19%) or earning more money (16%), according to the study.

Only 3% of the 1,600 marketers surveyed said they’d leave to go overseas or achieve a better work/life balance.

“The majority of marketers are looking to make their next move for an opportunity to learn something new, rather than chase the dollar,” Richard Wynn, regional director of Michael Page told Mumbrella.

“This is in complete contrast to the retail sector, where 38% of the people we asked said they’d leave their job for more money elsewhere,” he said.

The survey also found that the salaries of marketers are expected to increase by 3-4% over the next 12 months.

Wage increases are most likely for top performers and roles in high demand – such as digital marketers.

Digital marketers with experience working in the UK and US were in most demand, while those working in mining could expect the biggest pay raises.

Michael Page reported that performance-related bonuses are becoming popular as companies look to retain the best staff. Bonuses tend to be awarded at the mid to senior level, and fall between 10% and 20% of base salary levels.
